Although coming up to the end of the year, I am planning business and personal trips for 2023, for the first time I have decided the WCML is no longer a viable means of travel. Always been a big supporter of using the trains, living in the rural north, it was good to travel south or further north and be able to work on the trains there and back. Virgin were always good and the first class deals were always there so utilised them frequently.
I have given Avanti enough chances, irrespective of the current political climate, they never really provided the service they should do. When I find myself having to factor in "will Avanti cancel the service, will it terminate at Crewe or Preston, will I actually get to where I planned" for every single journey, there comes a time when enough is enough. I think I am at that point now.
I always allowed contingency on any journey for delays, believe that is a sensible plan but even that isn't enough currently!
Even if the services are running, the hit and miss seat reservations, crowding, overly cold or hot trains, no refreshments just means for over a 3 hour journey I find myself constantly asking "why didn't I drive!.
