According to the National Rail Enquiries app there is a Lumo train stopping at Arlesey tonight in the very early hours of tomorrow morning. It seems an incredibly random place for a Special Stop Order to be arranged. What is going on here? Why are Lumo calling at Arlesey tonight? Is this a mistake? Or is it actually happening and there is an explanation for this?

Seems likely to be an operational stop of some sort. I note that the train is timetabled to be diverted via the Hertford Loop tonight.

I dont rate anyone's chances of getting on or off there.

The stop was in last night as well but the relevant service stayed on the fast line ten minutes early and didn't stop. It also didn't go via Hertford North.

What kind of operational stop could that be? There is no depot or anything there so i can not think of a reason for this? If it was scheduled yesterday too but did not call than i wonder if this is just a mistake. It is scheduled as the last Southbound train of the day to call at Arlesey so i presume Lumo would be responsible for paying 100% delay replay if it fails to call and there is someone who wants to board.

The train's booked route is via Hertford North. Its the only Lumo service booked that way. Whether it goes that way, or via Welwyn, tends to depend on the night time line blocks, possessions etc.

In theory Lumo would also be obliged to arrange alternative transport...

Anyway, the stop has now been cancelled, as shown in this screenshot:

If it's an operational stop, and the service is booked via Hertford, it's entirely possible the stop is to pick up a route conductor. It could/would then be cancelled when rosters are finalised if the booked driver signs the route.

Could’ve just been to pick up a route conductor or relief traincrew of some sorts who may live or just board there. Would be no come back if it no longer needs to call as nothing to do with passengers. Purely for operational convenience & happens across the network on an ad-hoc basis whenever necessary.

Google maps still thinks it's going to call at Arlesey.

Unfortunately not. It was advertised as a passenger call.

Seems very odd to add as a passenger call. Lumo have no rights to stop there outside of normal circumstances. I suppose it’s in the trains database as is a 12-car platform.

There was a case in one of the National Rail Timetables (not sure of the correct title) -the thick book containing timetables for every service - when one timetable included a line of entry for a location that wasn't even a station. I mentioned it to one of my friends who then still worked in train planning (since retired) and he said that it was because the timing clerk had attached the wrong code, which meant it was picked up by the public timetable rather than just being a w.t.t. crew change point.

The default stop for a class 1 train in TPS is a 'T' stop (Train calls to set down and pick up passengers). This could be an import/manual entry error, or a data conversion error if the appropriate data tags weren't changed in the system (which is very easy to miss/get the wrong way round).

Thanks. Shown as stopping yesterday but passed through at 23:57. Maybe the MD lives nearby lol

Almost certainly a tired and stressed train planner trying to get the damn thing into TRUST before the evening publication run.

It's the same reason you occasionally see passenger calls at junctions and loops.

Either just a mistake in the working timetable or a quirk in how the service is pathed, as according to RTT it goes onto the Up Slow at Sandy and comes back onto the Up Fast at Cadwell junction, then goes on the Up Slow again at Hitchin! The joys of engineering work!
