Nine Elms would’ve worked but the Tube has grabbed that. Tbh, you could go with something Battersea, Battersea East or North maybe. But it’s one of those that’s used by locals and is rarely, if ever, a long distance destination so those that use it know it’s not in Wandsworth etc.
It's actually in Clapham. Not that near to Nine Elms. But no need to change it.

Loughborough Junction should be renamed to Camberwell
I had no idea there were trains to Camberwell; I've had to use the bus before!

I've just looked it up and it's only a 0.8 mile walk between the bus stop I ended up using and the rail station. That's very annoying.

Oh is it Clapham? I know it was close. I only really cycle through that area. That said, I do agree, it doesn’t need to change.

There are similarly misleading stations in London, such as Edgware Road (*2), Finchley Road (with or without Frognal). I know that some people seem to think that Finchley starts at Finchley Road, and that Tottenham is around Tottenham Court Road, and I imagine that Wandsworth Road and Edgware Road cause similar confusion.

Reminds me of the time I knew someone buying a ticket from Cambridge to London to go home from Uni. It was remarkably cheaper to go from Cambridge Heath to London than from Cambridge. He nearly bought the ticket until he asked why it was so cheap and I explained where Cambridge Heath *actually* was.

That said, Tottenham Court Road excluded as that is a destination in its own right, Wandsworth and Finchley Roads are mostly local stations used by people who know where they are. But I can understand the confusion haha.

Way on down South London town
I think all stations with "street" or "road" suffixes should go (apart from termini), and all stations that are named after the area whilst other stations in the town have suffixes, so "Streatham" and "Tooting" should be renamed to something like Streatham Wells and South Tooting respectively.

Old Street is one that really needs to be renamed to reflect the fact that it basically is Shoreditch. It's nearer to the bars and clubs than Shoreditch High Street Overground, particuarly if you're coming from the Balham and Clapham area which is a popular source of Shoreditch's visitors. "West Shoreditch" would probably be a much better name.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
Thinking about the present three letter codes for the stations, the following I would rename are as follows:

Birmingham International - Bickenhill for Airport and NEC after HS2 opens (BHI)
Reading - Reading General (RDG)
Oxford - Oxford General (OXF)

Those are the ones I can think of at the moment without also having to change the three letter code.

I don't agree with your second statement. I think that all stations that are named after the area, are the town centre and are the main station in the area, should only be named using that area. For example, Southampton Central should be renamed Southampton.

I think that the use of "and" in a station name is annoying and misleading. They should all be renamed according to where the station is.

For example,
Harrow & Wealdstone should be renamed to just Wealdstone as it isn't in Harrow. People heading for Harrow should use Harrow-on-the-Hill instead.
Elstree & Borehamwood should be renamed to just Borehamwood as it isn't in Elstree.
Hayes & Harlington should be renamed to just Hayes (West London) as it isn't in Harlington.
Finchley Road & Frognal should be renamed to just Finchley Road as it's an interchange with the underground Finchley Road, similar to the West Hampstead stations. (In the past I didn't realised that there is an Overground station at Finchley Road when my friend told me he was going to take the Overground after alighting a coach there. If the Overground station is also called Finchley Road and linked on the tube map, I will realise it is close to the underground Finchley Road station)
Caledonian Road & Barnsbury should be renamed to just Barnsbury.

Furthermore, West Hampstead Thameslink can simply be renamed as West Hampstead, as the stations are close enough to be treated to be parts of the same station, like Hammersmith (District & Piccadilly) and Hammersmith (Hammersmith & City), or Paddington (Circle & District) and Paddington (Hammersmith & City), while Hackney Downs and Hackney Central can both be renamed as just "Hackney" and becoming one station.

Or "Silicon Roundabout", which is what the area is known as.

International is never not going to have Birmingham in it. Bickenhill is just a group of 10-15 houses. General means nothing to anyone either.

Clapham High Street - Clapham
The problem with that is that Clapham Junction is informally known as "Clapham", as in "You want to get from Denmark Hill to Imperial Wharf? Change at Clapham"

As for Waterloo East, calling it Southwark discourages people from using it to interchange with SWR.

Or Hoxton, very close to that very busy area

The Old Street (former) roundabout is very much a destination in itself now

No way. From the passenger perspective, it's an adjunct to Waterloo proper (it's like Waterloo station is so big that it's served by its own railway station).
Renaming Waterloo East to Southwark would also risk confusion with Southwark Tube station, which is not very far away but not integrated or adjacent.

Waterloo East rail station is directly connected with Southwark tube station.

There is a direct connection between Waterloo East and Southwark from the end of the Waterloo East platforms.

Not that I think it should be renamed.

Burnley Manchester Road is one that's always stuck in my craw a bit for some reason, but I'm not sure what would be a better name for it. At least you can actually get to Manchester from there now!

As this thread is in the Speculative section and with me being pragmatic, all of the suggestions including mine are unlikely to happen.

Regarding the three letter codes, if another name for the station happens to fit the existing code, would it still cost quite a lot for the name change or would it be someway cheaper as it is only the name and not the three letter code that is amended?

I'm looking at this from an IT back end perspective.

Clapham High Street was just Clapham until it was renamed a few years ago, presumably to avoid confusion with the Junction (which of course isn't in Clapham, but renaming it would be pointless as everyone knows the area as Clapham Junction). And Wandsworth Road isn't in Battersea but in Clapham.

Was it? I’ve only ever known it’s as Clapham High Street and I’m nearly 30.

It would be cheaper as its one less thing to do, but would only make a small dent in any reduction.

Not in the UK, but I thought Limerick Junction should be renamed to refer to much-nearer Tipperary.

Changing the CRS code for a station causes a lot of problems. If it's a station that has no reservable services (such as when Smitham became Coulsdon Town) it's not too difficult to manage, but if it is a station that is served by reservable trains then there are a number of factors to deal with - and to make sure that every journey planner/ticketing system is aware of the timelines for the actions to be taken.

Isn't there already a Tipperary station one stop down the line?

Maybe "Tipperary Central" and "Tipperary Main Line" (or General or Interchange or Hauptbahnhof or whatever is favoured to capture that notion)
