Morning all,

So I thought I'd have a look at options for my trip in March 2023 to Scotland.

A few weeks ago I did a casual look and wrote down the 1S42 Euston to Glasgow Central left at 07:30 and arrived at 12:02.
Excellent I thought.

So being a strike day and having a couple minutes to myself I thought I'd double check and have a look at options ot out Glasgow Central once I got thereand where to go.

Now it is showing that same 1S42 EUS-GLC as ariving at 13:00 an hour later!

There is this in the route.

22nd March 2023 is not a weekend so how come there is this reversal ?

Okay it's nice to get a bit of track but seriously it is a difference of 15 minutes yet arrives in to Glasgow an hour late!

Anyone know why this is ?
Is it a diagram/TT error ?

Thanks in advance,

It is diverted via Shotts after running towards Edinburgh from Carstairs. A week long blockade to do engineering work in the 'off-season'?

This will I think be down to the major renewal work at Carstairs, which starts on the 20th March.

It's more than a week! Finish date I have seen is the 14th April, the work is a major re-organisation through Carstairs.

Thanks guys.

FFS - We had to cancel going in October due to Strikes and the wife picked that week.
Had we got in at 12:00 it'd be fine.
If it reverses she'll be needing a bucket (travel sickness) !

I wanted to get out to a clear off a few lines while she potters around the shops.

:(

It might be faster to go via Edinburgh on LNER/Lumo.
I imagine the Carstairs work might involve different diversions as the work progresses - the Midcalder reversal might not be available throughout the period.
March is too far away to get a full picture of the situation.

I was thinking that.

Checked 07:00 KGX-EDB @ EDB 11:18
then
11:45 EDB-GLQ arrives in GLQ @ 12:35
25 mins earlier but includes a bit of an earlier start from home and changing trains.

I'll wait until just before New Year and have a chat with her.
Either way she'll be grumpy.

Try reserving seats opposite each other and swap when the train reverses (assuming you're fine going backwards), or is going via Kilmarnock an option?

I'm fine backwards or forwards.

I'll have to chat with her later in the month.

This trip is driving me mad LOL

Wanted to get to Largs, Adrossesn Harbour and Weymss Bay. It may now have to change

Out of those 3, if I had to cut one I'd probably cut Largs. Nothing wrong with the line, just it's a lot of time taken to do the line up and down compared to Ardrossan Harbour.

That being said, it might work out that you could do the Ardrossan line, change at South Beach (I think) and do Largs then change for a bus to Wemyss Bay and then back to the trains.

Genuinely curious though, would the change of trains in Edinburgh be of benefit to your wife? The break in the fresh air, a stretch of legs etc, is what I'm thinking could be of benefit, of course I know very little about motion sickness.

If possible though I'd stick to the West Coast, I personally prefer it for the scenery. Either way, I hope you have a great journey!

But Largs is a really pleasant seaside town with a lovely promenade and definitely worth a visit.

If you have time take a trip on the 10 minute ferry crossing to the Isle of Cumbrae with its connecting bus to Millport - terrific views from the ferry, great half day trip!

I would second that idea, McGills run 4 buses an hour between Largs and Wemyss Bay (the 901 and 906), and they only take 15 minutes. The 901 also serves Gourock, providing another time-saving possibility.

All pretty good ideas.
I'm mostly going for the track coverage but the bus sounds like a good idea.
I want about an hour at Wemyss Bay to get a lot of photos of the station as it's one I've wanted to see for some time now.

Any idea what the plan is for the Glasgow/ Edinburgh Caledonian Sleeper services during this period? (They normally split or join at Carstairs, but presumably that won't be possible during the engineering work).
Also, how is freight affected?

Not yet, sorry. Presumably either via the ECML or the G&SW, the former being simpler for the sleepers with the Glasgow train running via Shotts and combining with the Edinburgh portion, ECS also via Shotts, at Waverley. Or, combine at Waverley and forward via the WCML, assuming the route via Carstairs South remains open throughout. But given the intense pressure on Train Planners recently I wonder how much work has been done so far.

Cheers. ECML diversions mean an hour+ earlier departure from Euston and omitting the usual ECML stops. G&SW might work - haven't been that way on the sleepers for about 15 years ...

Sleepers aren't going GS&W. Freight and Avanti only are diverting that way.

The journey time extension isn't helped by Avanti's excessive 15 minute reversal allowance. That not only directly increases the journey time but also means they have to sit at Carlisle to wait for a path.

The reason why you'll have seen it suddenly change is that these new schedules weren't previously published. But yes, there will be a long period of diversions during the Carstairs works - first a 17 day all line block, then just under a month where on weekdays only the line between Carlisle and Edinburgh is open. And there will be all line blocks on weekends until June.

Thank you both for the info.
I await the details with interest ...

EDIT:
Just looked up the details of my last sleeper trip via Dumfries.
29/02/04 (Sunday)
67016
2324 Edinburgh Waverley - Carlisle via Shotts, Larkfield Jn., G&SW, then straight into work (of course).
This was in the period of the West Coast Route Modernisation.

Not only that but if you book a specific seat at Glasgow eg a forward facing right-hand window, you'll end up with a backward facing left-hand window for the other 80% of the journey.

I'd also imagine they'll need to leave Glasgow with the first class at the rear.

Sounds like I need to go back there one day, I only ever went there to do the track and straight back out when I went there over a decade ago. I wasn't so into the whole exploring of places properly back then, it was all about doing the track and trains!

Unless the WCML tilting is likely to provoke your wife's travel sickness. If so then ECML a better choice.

Yes that's a good point, it's sorely missed on the ECML and a nice treat to have on the WCML on the these-days limited experiences I have of both routes.

So Voyagers via the G&SW for a period, then?
Just one a day, or more?
At the moment there's just three a day showing on weekdays during the 17 day all line block. I suspect some more are still yet to be published, as there are more showing on weekends.

There’s a good railway bookshop at Wemyss Bay, as well.

The 390s always have an effect on her. :(

Now that I cannot wait to see.
You may already know this, but the leading coach is one to always avoid then as it tilts at a greater angle and more abruptly due to a lack of sensors in front of it (I love the leading coach for this reason as I personally enjoy the tilt very much ) :) S-T

I'm surprised that Sleeper didn't run Glasgow to Edinburgh via Motherwell then attach and then retrace its steps towards Carstairs before heading south and avoiding the station.
