Hi guys,

I have my MMI coming up next for GTR (final stage!!)

I’ve managed to find pretty much all the information I need in terms of prep for the MMI thanks to the forum and some really helpful people on here!

One thing I have seen a few different opinions on is whether or not to change your answers once you have started. So I know you can change your answer from the short sentence you provided if you wish (this would be changed before you start answering the question in the MMI). I provided my short answers back when I did my assessments in September so there will be a few answers I will change now that I am further along and have a little more knowledge on what I want to include in the answers.

My question is if the interviewer tells you mid explanation to change your answer or they don’t feel your answer is suitable, do you change it or stick with it? I’ve seen a few people say it’s not a trick and to change it, then others say it’s part of the test and you should be confident in your initial answer.

I hope that all makes sense! Appreciate any advice.

May I ask, have you already sat the WCT assessment or is they done on the same day as the MMI?

There is No WCT test with GTR

I would say it was pretty much as expected after doing some research on here.

Started with some questions around the company and why I wanted the role, followed by some scored questions that you would answer in the STAR method, then onto them telling me about the pay, hours, shifts etc… then finally gave me the opportunity to ask questions.

In terms of prep I would say research the company well, think of legit reasons why you want to join the TOC and be a train driver (not I wanted to drive a train since I was a toddler lol)… try to incorporate company values and driver qualities into your answers. Have a bank of examples you can answer in the STAR format, base these around customer service, safety and difficult situations. Have some good questions for the end that are unique and show a genuine interest.

Apart from that be yourself, you should get a vibe off the interviewers. If they’re having a bit of a laugh here and there then get involved. Along with everything I mentioned above they’re also going to be looking at your personality, body language etc to see how you would fit in. Basically prepare yourself well and let your personality shine when you get the chance.

Most, if not all candidates think they messed up on the 2Hand Test. It’s designed that way, to see if you can recover.

May I ask, I understand you don’t do the MMI on the assessment day. But did you have to answer the MMI questions on a piece of paper?

You do fill out your mmi answers on the day. You can change these answers on mmi day though

Yep, like @john71 said, you fill in the form with the MMI questions but the MMI is on a different day. I hope I did ok obviously but we’ll see. It’s day 7 today and they said more than 7 days to wait for results so I’ll just keep constantly refreshing my emails

Might be worth an email to hr? I waited a while for dmi result but as soon as I emailed I got the result through

Well, the guy said 10 days so I’ll hold fire. I’ll email on Monday if I’m still in the dark, although I’d think that no response by then may be bad news anyway so …

I didn’t do the written communication test on the day so I assume it has been withdrawn completely.

No you won’t have anytime to prepare. But when you go in for your interview. The interviewer will ask you if you’d like to change any of your answers. Just say yes. But obviously have them memorised. And quickly write each one down. Just make sure each answer hits what they are looking for. For example.

1. When have you had to be relied upon to a job well in the face of difficulties.

I’ve only known a handful in my 20odd years to fail the MMI! The key is to not make up answers or lie because if there’s any doubt in what your saying you’ll fail

I think the majority that fail the MMI never come back to tell everyone they failed.


We mostly hear from people that passed. I don't think the majority can pass the MMI.

I did the MMI myself and passed but it wasn't easy. If you take it lightly you'll most likely fail it. Also its part of the two strike rule.
The Interviewers are well trained to keep on asking you more and more questions to find out if you're lying.
