Doesn't a 150/1 have more seating to a 156, especially those which have mostly all airline 3+2 seating (not the ones which are mostly 3+2 bays)?
A 156 has more useable seats thanks to being 2+2 in a 23m body with single leaf end doors. Plus, have you tried to use some of those airline seats on a 150?

The 156s have 3m extra per carriage which obviously helps with capacity a bit.

Path in place as 5N31 for 156419 to move to Northern on 27th November. Interestingly it's planned for 90mph max instead of 75.

I'm not convinced. Even if they do it's not particularly useful seating as most people will avoid the middle seat.

If I had to get rid of one of them it would be the 150's.

The ones with airline seats have about 4 more single side facing seats per vehicle at the expense of legroom fit for only an eight year old. A classic of utterly awful design.

Whilst I would defer to insiders on this point, I’d have thought that exiting the /9s is the priority over the other 156s.
156470, 156473 and 156497 already OOU parked at Barrow Hill, so it seems not.

I thought all units had wheelslip protection. I know some of the Northern 156s have just been fitted with WSP which prevents the wheels locking up and sliding. When under braking.

Nope, these 4 were never retrofitted. You can tell the difference it makes by the amount of time they spend with knackered wheels vs the other units.

Someone on Facebook has said that 156405 is off to Northern soon. Anyone heard anything?
Yeah, don't believe everything you read that is a passing comment from a railway enthusiast on Facebook! I don't think 405 is going to Northern at all.

Exactly what I was thinking. I think 405 is one of the ones that could stay until May.

Since when are any staying until May?
Always been the plan. They're booked on Barton on Humber as there's still a some Freightliner driver diagrams until May and also Skegness services for now.

Things will firm up considerably between now and May.

The Porterbrook ones that aren't going to Northern are staying until May (I presume the TT change). Its only meant to be 5 of them (don't know which ones yet).
156405/406/408/410/411 are the five not going to Northern. That’s been known for some considerable time.

So are EMR no longer ditching the 156s?
What part of 5 sets being retained until May for Barton and initially Skegness makes you think they're not being ditched exactly? They're being fully ditched in May, as was always the plan, and progressively ditched, if you will, basically from now onwards.

According to Raillog 156408 is at Northern now.
It isn't. At this very moment it is parked up at Lincoln Central.

thank you... 406 and 917 were in Derby yesterday, sounding great but looking tired.

Alternatively, it's a pity they couldn't gain some more 158s, such as those to be released from TfW Rail.
They should hopefully be left with more than enough 158s and 170s once remaining 16 Class 170s have transferred from WMR. I think any increase in the regional fleet from that will come about as a result of MML electrification i.e. electric Ivanhoe line services and maybe battery trains on the Matlock services.

In the name of fleet standardisation, it would have been good if EMR could have retained more class 158s instead of just 5 156s.
They are keeping all the 158s. The reason they need to hold onto a few 156s is because the drivers on the Barton branch don't sign any other traction at the moment

And because they won't get all of the 170s until May. The three-car ones from TfW transfer in spring and WMT are keeping 6 170s until the 196s enter service at Worcester.

Surely taking one back to the bare bodyshell and replacing half of that before totally rebuilding it from scratch must cost more than building some 195s.
A two car 195 would cost at least £4 - 5 million. So probably not no. A 156 also does not need as expensive electronics or air conditioning etc. Any new engine now needs to be Stage V emissions compliant, making it less efficient to operate. I don't think the existing 195 engines are even compliant...

But would building more 195s cost more than repairing the 156s and then ordering a replacement fleet for them in two/three years time as is inevitably going to happen anyway?
