TRIVIA: Lines where busier stations have fewer services calling

I hope I can be clear what I mean here. Using the example of lines going into London, it’s not unusual for “outer” services to call at less busy (by number of passengers) stations further out, but to skip busier stations further in. However, this is usually compensated for, and then some, by a larger number of “inner” services which serve the busier inner stations and (obviously) not the less busy outer stations.

Are there any instances where, for whatever reason, such compensation does not fully occur, meaning that Station X is busier than Station Y on the same line, but Station Y has more trains per hour calling? Or, for that matter, are there any simpler examples where there are only “outer” services on a line, all starting/terminating at the same station, but more of these call at Y than X?

I hope that’s relatively clear. I’m not sure if “on the same line” is specific enough, but I’m really thinking of examples where stations are within a few dozen miles of each other; comparing (say) Newcastle to Finsbury Park would probably be a bit silly.

Shenfield might? I think some of the stops on the Elizabeth Line (Ilford springs to mind as potentially) would be busier, but virtually everything stops at Shenfield due to it being the interchange point between fast running to Stratford, the Southend Branch etc so would see more trains stop than Ilford despite (possibly) having less pax overall?

Barking? Some C2C going through.
Clapham Junction must be in there somewhere too!
And Watford Junction for some LNWR services like the non-stop to Leighton Buzzard trains.

Based off 2020/21 usage figures:
  • Eastleigh and Southampton Airport Parkway
  • Exeter Central and Exeter St David’s
  • Portsmouth Harbour and Portsmouth & Southsea

If I’ve understood, these aren’t what the OP is after. The OP wants stations that are quieter in passenger number terms than the next (or nearly next) station, but the quieter one gets more trains for whatever reason. In my example (I haven’t checked it, so it’s an educated guess) all of the trains that stop at Ilford, also stop at Shenfield *plus* all the Southend, Colchester, Clacton etc. meaning Shenfield has more services than Ilford, but (I think) Ilford might be the busier station (in pax terms). This is how I interpreted it anyway!

St Mary Cray is a bit busier than Swanley, but the Victoria - Maidstone East service only calls at Swanley.

St Albans is busier than Luton or Luton Airport Parkway, but doesn't have any EM services calling.

Garforth off-peak is 1tph Leeds to York and 1tp2h Halifax to Hull, whereas Church Fenton is 1tph Blackpool to York and 1tp2h Hull to York and the sporadic Moorthorpe to York RRB. Bit of a stretch I know.

No, but St Albans has 4tph on the Sutton Loop which means, I think, it has more services calling than Luton and Luton Airport Parkway? I know some peak/first/last service Sutton loopers get extended but I don’t think it’s like that during the day. Everytime I think I’ve found an example, I find some services that change it. It’s certainly a brain teaser.

I haven’t checked the numbers, but I think I remember Farnborough North being significantly busier than North Camp and/or Blackwater, despite having only half as many trains.

I'm quite sure Polsloe Bridge is/was busier than both Lympstone Village and Newcourt despite getting half as many trains off-peak.

Selhurst gets some seldom fasts to Victoria even though it’s the least used station between Victoria and East Croydon by a lot.
