Presumably because of scheduled engineering work taking place between Hebden Bridge and Preston preventing the York to Blackpool trains from running.

Is Rochdale just a handy place to change tracks for the return service?

It even has a Bay platform - at Tod you would have to shunt via the Stansfield Hall curve to clear the main line.
They were using Hebden Bridge yesterday to turn back with the crossover. All be it with a tight turnaround.

Which is exactly what Southport - Todmorden services were doing. I’m sure an increased frequency on Rochdale - Todmorden is not necessary, so would it not have been easier just to run a Southport - York, or is the split something to do with how York - Rochdale is 195s but Southport - Todmorden requires Sprinters?

I caught a 22:19 service from York on 26/10 which to my surprise was a direct Northern York - Manchester Victoria service

Looking at the same train for tomorrow it seems to be 22:19 York - Blackburn

So presumably affected by the same engineering works at the time?

Timetable-wise it seems possible (+5 westbound from TOD), operationally perhaps more complex (sorting out both stock and crews, which has to be balanced against the extra mileage involved in keeping it simple.).
