1S31 (Voyager) looks to be going around on the Up line using the Bi-Di signalling, lots of cancellations showing in RTT although a Southbound XC does appear to be running.

I hope arrangements have been made to detrain the passengers. It doesn’t take an expert to work out from the photo that the train won’t be going anywhere in a rush. We all know what happens when trains aren’t evacuated in a timely manner.

I would like to think this also puts to bed the theory some seem to have that the diesel generator somehow makes 80x units immune to this type of incident. It doesn’t, it simply means a thunderbird shouldn’t be needed when the unit can finally move in however many hours/days time.

Why won't it go anywhere? There does not appear to be a tangle, so why not lower it and move slowly on diesel to a station where passengers can be transferred and the unit stabled?

It all has to be assessed. You can’t move a train after an incident like this without a full assessment of the OHLE first.

But you can strap the pan down and limp back to Newcastle on diesel before the assessment of the OLE. Trains are running past on the adjacent line (presumably on diesel mode, not clear from OTT) so the OLE's clear enough for that.

Nobody ever claimed the 80x units were immune to this type of incident with the pan up.

This is precisely the purpose of the Diesel engine on the 801s, is it not?

The original plan was to strap down the defective pan and allow the train to continue. That will now take longer than anticipated, so a train-to-train evacuation is happening now.

Oddly enough they did know what they were doing, and if the original plan had worked the train would have been moving itself.

Which was exactly the plan.

So the OHLE isn’t down on the other line. A very similar incident happened at near enough the same location about a year ago, the opposite line was clear, but the line with the incident had OHLE damage and it took a while before the unit could be safely moved.

Nobody ever claimed the 80x units were immune to this type of incident with the pan up.

Not in this thread but from the level of surprise some people seem to have when an 80x isn’t moved instantly after this sort of incident, some seem to be of that impression.

It’s one of the purposes of them yes.

I wasn’t trying to suggest they didn’t know what they’re doing. Simply making the point it was something that I hoped was being done, as we’ve seen in other incidents it isn’t always done and can lead to passengers taking matters into their own hands.

There is overhead damage to the rear of the train, how bad is unknown as the OHL did not trip.

As others stated the plan was to strap the pan down and move forward on the front pan, this isn’t possible.

Customer have evacuated onto 1S05 which is now heading towards Edinburgh.

An hour block will take place at 1230 with OHL isolated on both lines to do work on roof of S01.

As a result 1E11, 1W11 and 1E15 will all run diesel between Newcastle and Berwick.

That will then hopefully allow 1S01 to move north on its front pan.

A perfect example of the benefit of using the rear pan under normal running!

Just need the other 80x TOCs to follow suit.
I can’t understand why they don’t, Avanti have done it for years with the Pendo’s.

With respect, your first post in the thread could be read as having an air of the condescending armchair controller to it, in the sense of saying "well I hope they're going to do [the things they know they have to do]".

Bit harsh. The flip side is that these fora are always deeply protective of the whole industry even when criticism is at face value plausible. One of the industry's weaker points is leaving passengers on stuck trains for what seems to the layman a very long time so it wasn't an unreasonable thing to ask.

As @a_c_skinner has said, my post was made basically to highlight that it is one of the railway’s weaker points, and one of the things that you can’t always be sure will actually be done. I’m pleased to see that not only has it been done in this case, but seemingly quicker than is often the case too.

Interesting LNER now seem to be operating front pan rather than rear pan on all their services today

I may be putting 2 and 2 together here based on an LNER tweet, but Looks like 4L98 Masborough to London Gateway has struck a platform at Huntingdon. Lot of congestion in area to southbound services
