Hello good people,

Wondering if anyone would feel confident enough to venture an informed opinion on the prospects of reaching Inverness from Manchester before 17.00 on Tuesday 25th October? I am currently booked with an off peak single, 06.50 Northern Man Vic to Wigan NW, 07.38 Avanti WNW to Ed Waverley, 10.33 Scotrail Ed Wav to Inverness, to arrive 14.15. My ticket will therefore be valid on other services. I made a similar journey last week from Manchester to Aberdeen in which I rerouted myself via Glasgow in the face of multiple short notice cancellations, arriving about 75 mins later than planned.

Thank you!

Curious that the journey planning software seems to punt you onwards to Waverley to change when, as has been said, the chances of successfully making a connection are improved by changing at Haymarket. And it's not as if Haymarket's facilities are bad - cafe, shop, toilets etc all available.

Waverley has higher 'interchange priority' due to being a higher 'class' of station. Unless on an advance, I'd personally use Haymarket on this journey

Even on an advance, I understand they treat any ticket with “Edinburgh” as valid at Haymarket or Waverley in practice, and I certainly wouldn’t expect any issue with changing at Haymarket (I’ve done so before plenty!)

But if my onward leg seat was reserved from Waverley this would personally be a consideration

Do tickets still say "Edinburgh Haymarket" and "Edinburgh Waverley" on them? I thought there had been a push some years ago to refer to them only as Haymarket and Edinburgh respectively.

I thought that they always just said 'Haymarket' or 'Edinburgh' respectively

Thanks to all who contributed, just to update that the journey went without a hitch. Which just goes to show it is possible to make a lengthy journey by train, even in these troubled times!
