What is the best way to book tickets for a large party of schoolchildren and teachers (approx 30 in total)? I believe there are group discounts booking specifically for a large group, but who do I contact? TOC would be FGW. Any idea of what sort of reductions one can get, and can you book a large number of advance tickets?
Thanks for any advice.

Information you're looking for is here. Not sure if they will give a discount to school groups other than the one mentioned there, probably best to phone up and ask.

The FGW discount for groups of 10 can be less generous than GroupSave.

If your group of approx 30 has 4 adults in it each one can 'take' up to 7 children with them on a GroupSave ticket. This is effectively 4 adults for the price of 2 (1 adult with 3 of the 7 children having half price 'adult' tickets) plus up to 4 additional children at £1 each.

If you can provide more information on the composition of your group, your origin and destination as well as date of travel then I can work out the cheapest option for you.

Depends on the lenght of journey etc, ring FGW customer services on 08457 000125, bnm is right in that Groupsave would be cheaper but only if travelling Off-Peak, if travelling in the peak then the normal group discount would work out better.

If the journey parallels SWT (e.g. Exeter - London) you may want to consider travelling with SWT. They have few group restrictions compared to FGW and will always offer GroupSave if it's cheaper than the ordinary Group discount.

Do the TOCs not do 'special deals' for large groups like that, if it's booked over the phone rather than the ticket office? If buying at the ticket office, Group Save 4 may be the best bet.

Yes. FGW's 'special deal' is a 26% discount for groups of 10 or more, only available by calling them and at least 7 days in advance. As already pointed out though, GroupSave can work out considerably cheaper if the travel is Off-Peak, and FGW Group Bookings via Telesales will offer GroupSave or a combination of GroupSave and Groups of 10 or more if that is the cheaper option.

Oh, that surprises me. That used to be available in the ticket office at NXEA, but I never used it as the discount made it pointless. I thought they'd offer a better discount than that over the phone.

Phone up fGW Telesales on the usual number (08457 000 125), preferably at least five days in advance, and they'll give you the cheapest rate, whether that's the normal Group discount or GroupSave.

Cheers,

Barry
