I would say not having a GE would be an act of Tory suicide. It will be seen as an act of unbelievable "born-to-rule" arrogance, and whoever replaces Truss will I suspect become almost as disliked as she has become. And I suspect it will attract mass protests and anger, as has been suggested on here even (I think) by Tory supporters.

If they had a GE now, they would get a hammering - not to the same level as polls suggest but a Labour majority of >100. Instead, they'll try to hang on and see how much they can claw back in the next two years.

I don't understand how anyone can have sympathy for her. She knew exactly what she was getting herself into, but let her rampant ego and ambition take over.

It will be ... interesting, to see whether there is a similar stitch-up to last time to not give the members any of their preferred candidates - or indeed what happened in 2017, when they managed to avoid going to the members at all.

If it does get to the members, and they get a real choice between say a Sunak-style character and a Braverman/Badenoch-style character, whether they do a Labour 2016 and say 'no, what we said before really was what we wanted, we don't care what the parliamentary party think' or a Labour 2020 and say 'ok, that didn't seem to work out, let's go for something rather more in line with what the parliamentary party would like'.

I agree with pretty much everyone here that we do now need a general election, but hard to see one happening before March, what with winter and Christmas and all.

I have no sympathy for her

She wanted the job, having been "on manoeuvres" for some time - remember the cover shoots and all that promo stuff. She also cynically played to the xenophobes in the Tory party membership (is Macron a friend?). Moreover, she pushed ahead with a Tufton Street based mini-budget that would massively benefit the super rich despite the warnings of such measures from Sunak (and others).

People expecting a general election need to calm down. The power to call one is in the hands of the Tory MPs (not solely the Tory leadership) - and the polls at the moment would see many of them losing their seats. Even if a new Tory PM wanted to call one, they would have to convince the whole party to throw their jobs away - simply not going to happen, more likely is that such a PM would find themselves losing their job themselves.

As for Boris standing, when's his privileges committee hearing - you know that one which may suspend him long enough to start a recall petition. Anyone for 4 Prime Ministers in 2022?

It was reported on Sky News that the members won't get a say and it will be the parliamentary party that makes the choice as per the pre-2000 rules.

Those that sacked him would find their authority and standing severely undermined. And Johnson will be out to get them...no jobs in the cabinet. Would almost certainly be the end of the Tory party.

That's why I feel pity for her - her political ambitions, though they are down to ego, still lie in tatters, and that must be difficult for her to come to terms with. Similarly with Boris.
However much I disagree with this crop of Conservatives (and disagree with them I do, vehemently) I still think it's important to view them with compassion as the human beings they are, hence my sympathy.

The last 2 months, let alone the last 6 years, has been a bulldozer to the idea that FPTP is necessary for "stable Government".

I am in favour of scrapping FPTP and replacing with a proportional representation system of voting.

This could be tied in with the concept of progressive federalism where power is devolved to the regions and local councils.

With PR, at least in each region, the electorate would actually get governments that have been voted for.
