If you’re retired in an £800,000 house you paid off before young people were mostly locked out of capital, you should, actually, be forced to downsize or borrow.

Why should young people stuck renting subsidise these people? Triple lock should have gone in the bin years ago. The social settlement for most young people in their 20s in grossly unfair.

No. As a household you worked to pay for it and / or if an inheritance component your ancestors did.
At the same time you paid your NI part of which is to the state pension funding. Directly yes it paid those then retired but the expectation was when you were retired you would receive the state pension with the same buying power. I don't dispute the triple lock should go. What there should also be is an index of essentials food, energy, water, council tax, local public transport which the state pension should track. Right now this would be higher than the CPI.

Looking at my parents, they worked hard to purchase a family home for £300,000 over 25 years ago. They have replaced the kitchen, balcony and toilets but not increase the size of the home. Their home is now worth over £1,300,000 for honestly not doing much. Their property has brought in a similar income, than their own income before tax!

As a result of the silly house prices, for me to purchase a family home, an hour commute from London, I am now staring down the barrel with a 35 year mortgage and over half a million in debt to pay off on top of lots of bills such as university fees which our parents escaped from. Hopefully property prices stablise over the next few decades, so our children have some chance to purchase something and not stuff the next generation.

Then, I could talk about the far better pensions that our parents had in the past which hardly anyone is able to get now.

How can a house both be lived in and bring in income ??
It has gained value but that can only be released by selling it.
Buy-to-let is different of course and the eithics of that are seperately debatable.

Regardless while housing prices have escalated this is irrelevant to the state pension.

I think there will be some form of energy price support after April next year, because if not current projections show a price increase of about 75%.

This will alienate many Conservative voters, and is therefore politically unacceptable. (to the government, that is)

Logically I concur but until they make a commitment and the point where the can make a U-turn is passed planning anything based on disposable income is a risk.

The Grauniad is saying that Stein’s suspension was a condition demanded by Javid for not hijacking PMQs over the way he briefed against others; Javid waived his right to ask a question. Stein believes he will get away with it, possibly because others at No.10 are also deep in the mire.

My guess is it's a group of influential Tory MPs that includes Hunt and Shapps; neither of them have enough support in the current party to be a sole leader, so there must be others behind the scenes helping.

Given Hunt managed last place in the first leadership ballot with just 18 votes from MPs a mere 3 months ago, and Shapps' leadership campaign lasted all of two days before pulling out even before the first vote, presumably due to not even being able to muster that number - yes, that would be one way of putting it!

The Tory party must be closer to splitting right now than ever.

its the men in grey suits pulling the strings in the background to reset the government that looks like something that is half competent. Truss is just the figurehead now

Perhaps half-competent, but at the expense of looking like nothing remotely democratic. As Braverman herself said a couple of weeks back, it looks remarkably like a coup.

If nothing else, if the parliamentary party are trying to ensure their members are thoroughly furious and will resign - or at the least not be bothered to go out and campaign, they couldn't have done a better job.

Robert Peston is saying that it is matter related to ‘security’. BBC (Chris Mason) says he has been told it was as a result of an ‘honest mistake’.

It's gotta be deeper than a simple and on the face of it a seemingly trivial mistake. Anyhow I'm glad to see the back of her, as a tofu-eating woke Guardianista.

Resignation letter: https://twitter.com/SuellaBraverman/status/1582762282626736128

I suspect her departure is less to do with
I sent an official document from my personal email to a trusted parliamentary colleage [] This constitutes a technical infringement of the rules [] it is right for me to go

And much more to do with
The business of government relies upon people accepting responsibility for their mistakes. Pretending we haven't made mistakes, carrying on as if everyone can't see that we have made them, and hoping that things will magically come right is not serious politics. I have made a mistake; I accept responsibility; I resign.
I have concerns about the direction of this government, Not only have we broken key pledges that were promised to our voters, but I have had serious concerns about this Government's commitment to honouring manifesto commitments.

Course it is she was told to get rid of her and they've had to dream up a cover story which looks pretty weak and hasn't taken others in the past

Yes, this is how I read it too.

What a mess.

But looking the opposition, they are equally terrible. Starmer has open goal after open goal but gets mired in petty insults and point scoring, like much of his front bench, rather than trying to show they are mature enough to run the country.

Our politics really is in a dire state.

"Honest mistake", my arse. You do not accidentally send emails on a personal email account rather than a work one.

Regardless, good riddance to Cruella (as it was to Patel before her). What is it with the Home Office and rather unpleasant characters running it?

A thought, not a conspiracy theory. Braverman may have resigned as she decided to distance herself from Truss and avoid being pulled down with the ship when it sinks. Resigning on what can be spun as a morally decent and honest choice is far more likely to keep your reputation intact than going off in a huff. (It could even be brought about by a deliberate mistake, but a genuine cack up is far more likely.)

I would agree. Accidentally sending a Government email from a personal email account hardly seems like a resigning matter. That certainly looks to me like Braverman must be using that mistake as an excuse to express no confidence in (and distance herself from) Liz Truss. Given that Braverman comes from the right of the Tory party - the wing that would normally be expected to be most behind Liz Truss, that seems to be quite significant.

According to Paul Goodman of ConHome, apparently Truss wanted Braverman to announce a relaxed migration plan in order to improve the OBR growth forecasts, and they both had "the mother of all rows" about it:

Understand that the background to the @SuellaBraverman resignation was the mother of all rows about migration. Told she was under pressure from Number Ten to announce liberalising migration plan which would make it easier for OBR to say Gvt would hit growth target.

By resigning over a minor technical matter is she maybe making the point that Truss should resign over far worse?

At what point can I get off this utterly ridiculous joke that is becoming the UK & press the reset button?

If 39 Conservatives vote against the government on the fracking debate at 7pm, then the goverment collapses.

Four have already said they will do that; it could get very interesting indeed.

In other news, Brian Clough was at Leeds one day longer than Braverman was Home Secretary.
