What's the position as a passenger/customer for being significantly undercharged for PAYG travel on National Rail? In this instance, I'm particularly referring to keyGo.

A few weeks ago, I made a series of journeys with keyGo across the south coast, touching in and out at various stations and on a bus, too.

Here's a simple breakdown from my Key travel history:

From this set of journeys, I'd argue that the fare I should have been charged for was Wivelsfield to Seaford Off-Peak Day Return with 16-25 railcard discount for £7.75.

Well... just wait until you hear I was charged a measly £1.45 for an anytime single from Burgess Hill to Wivelsfield, instead! This is an obvious error, and presumably the PAYG system got very confused for some reason, or I have uncovered a glitch. It would be interesting to see if I can reproduce this, or whether it was a one-time issue (or someone from GTR gets there before me!).

I do wonder where I stand in regards to this, though. I haven't breached the Terms for keyGo travel as I have touched in and out at every point along my journey, but section 10 states that "If you believe you have been charged the wrong fare for the journeys you have made on a particular day, please contact Customer Services. You have until the Wednesday following the date of travel to query the fare. After this time, it will not be possible to amend.". The way this is worded implies that it is more targeted towards if you have been overcharged, though. At this point, though, it is already too late to amend the journey to bump it up to the ticket it was meant to be (and from my previous experiences with GTR, they'd probably just tell me "congratulations" and not charge me more anyway).

Just to put this into context, red is the journeys I made, and blue is what I was charged for...

I don't think you have done anything wrong. With all such PAYG systems, it is down to the system to determine how much it charges. We have heard of other instances of people being (arguably) overcharged compared to buying a paper ticket; evidently the system can also make 'favourable' calculations.

As long as you are touching in and out as required, you don't have anything to worry about.

Yet another example of why pay as you go or account-based billing with single fares and relevant caps only is the future, and everything else is essentially a distraction from that.

Obviously it is great for anyone personally who is a beneficiary of a much lower price than on paper would have been, but it seems unlikely that this sort of thing will make for a sustainable service long-term. I agree with the above suggestion that you don't need to take any action if you're confident you've touched correctly, as you clearly are.
