Now for something different. It's very simple really. Can you remember music videos where trains featured in it? We'll start off with UK.

I'll begin. Paul Mc Cartney's Hope of Deliverance from 1994 features some preserved railway line briefly with what looks to be a class 25 making an apperance.

Thinking caps folks!

Well there's always the 'classic' Black Lace 'Do The Conga' video, shot around Keighley on vintage buses (although possibly not that vintage then) and on the KWVR. Given all the bragging the KWVR does about the bl**dy Railway Children, I wonder why they're not also promoting themselves as the home of the Do The Conga video?

Ah, 546! NIR's sole air-conditioned mk II, a mk IIf TSO bought off BR and converted to a grill/bar car on the same layout as the mk IIc 547, now the pride of the RPSI's lovely mk II set. Looks like an ECS working from the old Central Service Depot that was next to Bridge End station, going over the city end of the Newtownards Road into Central station.

That video a nice reminder of the 'other' (real?) Belfast that was so familiar to me for so many years and that has now (happily I guess) disappeared.

there is what I believe is a 4EPB at the start of "Our House" by Madness

That's a class 501 jail wagon either on a Euston > Watford or Broad Street > Richmond working. They were 3 car sets and on 57' frames rather than the 64' EPBs.

There's some moody EMU action (along with some very 80s hairstyles) in the video for Jim Diamond's "Should Have Known Better" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4A4UnFi2C8
A class 312 at one point with a blind for "Royston" at one point, and at least one other EMU of some description... plus a station to identify too....possibly Finsbury Park???

Queen’s “Breakthru” video in it’s entirety was shot on the Nene Valley Railway, with the band racking up some mileage on a flat wagon behind GWR 2-8-0 3822. I can’t post a youtube link unfortunately as I’m on my lunch break at work and Youtube is blocked, but it’s easy enough to find, out there on the internet.

As an aside, I’ve always thought that Saxon’s “Princess of the Night” single from 1981 should have had a video to go with it featuring suitably atmospheric shots of steam trains. That would have been epic. Ah well, until I become a multi-platinum disc selling god of rock (It’s always nice to have an outlandish dream) and I have my opportunity to cover the song whilst paying Network Rail millions of pounds to shut down the northern half of the WCML for a night whilst the filming for the video takes place over Shap,:D I’ll have to content myself with the cover shot on the single of a GWR “Castle” or “Hall”. Oh well. ;)

I've always imagined The Prodigy's Diesel Power to be well suited to a railway "POWAH" themed video.

Paul Hardcastle's Just for the Money video features duffs, deltics, blue and grey stock, and also my favourite loco ever 40118 masquerading as the great train robbery loco. At least they didn't paint D326 on it, which would have jarred somewhat with the disc headcode.

A lot of the scenes on that video come from the film Don't Look Back which was a documentary of Dylan's tour to the UK in 1965. There's a number of shots of trains in the film and of course we still had steam in thiose days so you get a bit of steam and Mark 1 action.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a Music Video with a woman prancing around on the front of Adam's Radial Tank 0488 which must've been shot on the Bluebell, but I don't know which song it is. :)

Don't forget the Ray Davies classic film "Return to Waterloo" which is essentially a feature length music video, but stuffed full of slamdoor stock :) Lots of clips on YouTube

A couple of things come to mind...
1) When Top of the Pops played "Ticket to Ride" by The Beatles when it got to number 1 (1965??????? Yeah, I AM that old!), they couldn't get The Fab Four into the TOTP studio to mime to it, so the Beeb ran a speeded up film of the journey from Victoria to Brighton from the drivers window.
2) "FireStarter" by The Prodigy - The video for that was shot in the Jubilee Line extension tunnel near Westminster when some of the track was down and some of the track bed didn't even have ballast. Check out...

It distresses me to put that up, cos I'd describe The Prodigy in Morse Code as 9 dots and a dash in that order, with an optional dot at the end!
