I commute from Battle to London with an annual 1st class season ticket. But they've now scrapped 1st class which is an awful decision for a nearly 2 hour journey. I get a 1st class ticket so I have more chance of getting a seat for such a long journey.

What can I do, move to a Southern area? This is really frustrating and upsetting.

Turn up a little earlier at the terminus for heading down to Battle? Obviously you're practically guarenteed a seat on the up direction so no need to concern about that.

It's not an awful decision for the majority travelling Standard who now have a slightly improved chance if a seat...

Which is the whole point.

I find the only solution is to get on at Charing Cross or Cannon Street. Getting on at London Bridge can be a bit of a lottery (and seems to be busier than all the other stations now).

I do find that the first class seats on the 375s are less comfortable (they are shaped in a strange way) than the standard class ones - with the exception of the awful 375/9s of course.

Physically the first class seating is not going to disappear overnight, so you can still sit in it of course...

Which matches with the official statement of 'due to changes in travel patterns post-pandemic'.
Dft first proposed total removal of Southeastern first class in the Dec 2017 franchise ITT, (although IIRC that competition petered out eventually), so the writing was already on the wall.

I’m not sure if it should be seen as that much of a surprise…

I'm surprised it lasted on most commuter trains as long as it has.

At least some people do generally (or at least did, pre-COVID) seem to be prepared to pay the premium for first class for a guaranteed seat, and when enough people are its worthwhile selling first class seasons why turn away extra money (though presumably in this case the cost of enforcing it enough to make it worthwhile existing was presumably judged to be too high)

I hope Southern remove their First Class as well. Total waste of money.
If you have to stand, then you have to stand.

On longer distance services, southeastern should at least in their last refurbishment changed First Class (FC) into something worth the money but then such trains wouldn't be able to be in the same pool at other 375/x

Most people sit in FC without an FC ticket anyway. Stops correct fare dodging as well.

I wonder if 1st class tickets involving an operator in addition to South-Eastern will be reduced....

Was it always guaranteed? Particularly when many TOCs reduced the number if First Class seats, plus you have of course the issue of those travelling in 1st without the appropriate ticket, either deliberately or otherwise.

(It was not unusual to see 1st full on ScotRail 170s at peak times on the E&G but still some seats in Std.)

I agree on both points

Ideally the change will reduce instances of that, at least slightly.

It's certainly a problem

Just to be completely clear, is first class on ALL Southeastern services going to be removed? In SE's page it said all mainline trains so I slightly confused

Yes. High Speed and Metro services are already standard class only so the change is only for the Mainline services. A few Metro services use class 465/9 but the first class areas can be used by standard class ticket holders.

Actually, one of my guilty pleasures in life was to travel on the Mid-Sussex between Horsham and Arundel in one of the few first class compartments (class377/4?) at Sunset admiring the South Downs whilst drinking a (or two) glass of wine.
An even more guilty pleasure was when a couple of RPI's turned up, dishing out Penalty Fares like confetti at a wedding....

Now that paper timetables at stations are no more, how can I find out which Southern services actually have first class and which ones have it declassified?

Timetables on their website?
You'd think. But on Southern's website, Live Departures doesn't show it, nor do the timetables (I've not checked every one, but it's not given in the key to the chart). But you can buy first class tickets for flexible fares on any train.

On my usual route there used to be a couple trains a day, around 6am, where the first class was in force, and the rest of the time you could freely sit in it. Since Covid I'm not sure which trains, if any, still have first class in force.

You can look up which trains are advertised as having first class on sites such as Real Time Trains, which use the timetable data published on behalf of GTR.

Where would you be travelling to/from using Southern's services? Looks like most of their trains on the East Coastway line towards London Victoria (via Gatwick Airport) has first class accommodation.

Let's say Streatham Common to West Croydon or Brighton.
Yes for Streatham Common to West Croydon.

For Streatham Common to Brighton there aren't any direct trains to Brighton so you'll probably need to change en route at somewhere like East Croydon.

Just about everything South of East Croydon (onwards to Brighton) does, however, have first class accommodation.

It’s clearly shown in the online Southern “mainline” timetables I’ve just checked, ie for the longer distance routes where first normally is available. Also shown on the Watford Junction timetable although it’s in the “metro” list.

Every single Southern Mainline train towards the south coast via Croydon and Gatwick and Redhill all have first class.

Some metro services (5 coaches) do not have first class I believe and if one has purchased a first class ticket and had found that FC is non existent or is full or declassified, they can go to Southerns website and apply for the difference between a standard ticket and a first ticket at:

Used Watford Junction as having FC because they have to use /2s which are primarily used on Watfords but are equipped with FC for those journeys where it operates elsewhere on the Southeen Network

Do they announce at the station the first class is not in use or on the train? Some people posting here are of the opinion if it says standard class in the timetable and the train has first class unless told otherwise or you ask the guard, you shouldn't sit in first class.

Others say that it is driven by the timetable. I agree.

I use Real Time Trains and one Sunday I was surprised to find that trains from Epsom Downs contained first class. Surprising as trains during the week from Dorking and Horsham didn't.

There are plenty of Southern branded trains running with first class in them and the timetable saying standard class only. Working to Victoria is a common route.

I don't know about at the station but on Southern services it says on the on-board displays, though you may need to wait a while for it to scroll to that. Thameslink does too.

I cannot imagine paying nearly £9000 to sit in Southeastern "first class".

OP does somehow seemingly with no regret!

It is a total waste of money just for a head towel thingy and a charger port unless in the refurbishment all 375s no matter class was fitted with Charging points.

It is a definitely great step forward in making travel more inclusive and increasing seats.
