Is the Class 334 due for refurbishment?

I’ve been travelling on the Class 334s a lot more recently to get to work and I was truly shocked at how terrible they look internally and externally. The interiors are really grubby inside with worn seat covers, dirty flooring and the exterior is really dirty too.

I’ve always really liked the 334s and I know a lot of money went into refurbishing them into the Scotrail colours not to mention aircon and WiFi but I can’t even remember when that was now. Are they due a refurb? Most I’ve been on look tired inside.

All I know is there are plans for their replacement alongside the Class 156, 318 & 320 as part of Scotrail's Decarbonisation and Standardised Fleet Strategy.

I was actually wondering if ScotRail budget for customer side maintenance had been reduced. I’ve been on quite a few 380 recently and a lot of them had issues. I thought Pre-Covid they were in excellent condition.

The 380s were always in really good condition but aren’t they all still in the process of being refurbished?

Sorry I don’t know. A lot of the ones I travel on have the new priority seating covers that were first introduced on the 385.

The issues they I’ve seen recently are

  • Next stop signs not working
  • PA system getting the wrong station names on routes.
  • Connecting carriage doors not working.
  • Trim panel pieces not attached correctly and coming off
  • Toilets out of order and in one case when it was in use absolutely disgusting and this was at 8am so near start of service.

Slightly off topic but 334040 hasn’t been out for ages. This question has been asked elsewhere before but does anyone know what the position is?

I hadn’t realised 334s were part of this, I thought it was just the remaining br electrics - 318/20. They still seem new-ish to me.

The 334 replacements are being procured alongside the 318 and 320 replacements, but it doesn't mean that they'll be delivered and brought into service at the same time.

Right now it would be good just to get all the 334's serviceable there seems to be regular issues with short forming thanks to train faults on the services these trains operate.
