Would this have been the 'Whitby Moors Rail Tour' from Whitby towards Manchester on the evening of Saturday 6th March 1965? If so, believe it was double headed by K4 No. 3442 "The Great Marquess" and K1 No. 62005?

Anyone able to confirm?

Yes the loco behind the K4 was K1 62005 on the 6th March 1965 railtour. But did the OP want information on the last normal service BR passenger working?

Quite possibly. @Class08Shunter. Can you clarify?

Obviously the Saturday 6th March 1965 "Whitby Moors Rail Tour" (steam) working did convey passengers. Possible that any "normal service" BR workings before closure might well have utilised Metro Cammell DMUs.

As regards possible alternative routes between Whitby and York, doubt that any ordinary passenger service trains originating from Whitby since 1965 will have continued to York via Middlesbrough/Northallerton. Again, can anyone confirm?

It confirms a hazy recollection (from reading Railway Mag?) that it was diesel hauled and possibly by a class D200 (40).
Believe that a Class 40 diesel hauled working did follow behind the "Whitby Moors Rail Tour" special on Saturday 6th March 1965, but only went as far as Malton, not York.

Information about the last special train on the pickering to rillington junction line.

I searched up about the Whitby Moors Rail Tour but I can't find anything about a Class 40. All I can find are pictures of K4 3442 'The Great Marquess' and K1 62005.

That'll probably be the Class 40 mentioned upthread, being the 6.54 p.m. (?) passenger working from Whitby on Saturday 6th March 1965. Might just have been D259.

As already discussed though, it terminated at Malton, and didn't continue to York.

There will have been some freight workings between Pickering, Marishes Road, Rillington Junction and Malton after this date, but they only lasted until 1st July 1966.

I wonder which class 40 hauled the last service that terminated at malton as @30907 said that it may have been D200 that hauled the service.

No idea, but Mcr Warrior has just suggested possibly D259 and may have a reason :).

It seems to have been a York North engine around that time and there is a reference here:

There's a photo taken from out of a carriage being hauled by Class 40 No. D259 approaching Rillington Junction on Saturday 6th March 1965 on the 8.55 a.m. Whitby->Malton working, included in "The North Yorkshire Moors Railway and The Esk Valley Line - Past and Present" (2017 book) by John Hunt.

Doesn't mean, of course, that it also did the later 6.54 p.m. working, but at least D259 was in the area that day!

Martin Bairstow’s Railways Around Whitby, Volume One (Author, 2008) suggests, although it does not state explicitly, that by the end all trains were DMU worked except the first one of the day from York, which carried mail and parcels, and its return around 08.55. However, it would be quite reasonable to substitute a loco-hauled set on the last train, when all those people who never used the line came to bemoan its loss.

The photo doesn't show a class 40, it shows a class 47 on a freight train.

Is that photo online and if it is where can I find it?

Can't find that picture. Is it under a tag?

This one, I think...

A correspondent named 'Locoman1966' says...

Very nice shot Alistair. I'm sure this loco as D259 worked the final direct service York to Whitby via Pickering in the mid 60's?

The 6:54 pm (last train of the day) from Whitby to Malton, was still booked for loco haulage until the end (March 1965). The diesel then worked a local freight from Malton to York. As mentioned up thread this train would have followed 62005+3442 on the railtour, which was booked to depart from Whitby at 4:30 pm. On 6/3/65, the journey (of the 6:54 pm) would have been in darkness, so there are probably no photographs of the train.

But that picture was taken in 1977
The picture isn't important, it's the comment (referred to twice) relevant to your question.

May I also clarify that I referred upthread to "a D200 (40)" ie one of the class not the specific loco of that number.

With reference to the book "Railway Memories No 19,York to Scarborough,Whitby & Ryedale" by Stephen Chapman,Bellcode Books.
Included is a photo of the last train from Whitby at Levisham in the dark. It looks like D259,the loco also pictured earlier that day at Grosmont in the same book.
Maurice Burns travelled on the line on the last day and has had lots of photos published, the above included. An excellent photographer.

The photo taken in daylight at Goathland must have been of D259 on the 8:55am, mentioned by @Mcr Warrior in Post #12. The 6:54pm from Whitby reached Goathland at 7:25pm, which in early March would be 90 minutes after sunset.

Found a photo of the Class 40 at Pickering on the last day with a Whitby-York service. This wasn't the last train. This was the 8.55am Whitby-York service.8531179852_699dbd5961_o.jpgThis was the last train. The 6.54pm Whitby-Malton service.

Hello does anyone know what pulled the last passenger train from whitby to york?

Believe that a Class 40 diesel hauled working did follow behind the "Whitby Moors Rail Tour" special on Saturday 6th March 1965, but only went as far as Malton, not York.

Martin Bairstow’s Railways Around Whitby, Volume One (Author, 2008) suggests, although it does not state explicitly, that by the end all trains were DMU worked except the first one of the day from York, which carried mail and parcels, and its return around 08.55. This is the sort of research that I like! I've tried to do similar exercises on other routes that are of particular interest to me.

Ideally I would be looking at the relevant WTT, but that isn't to hand. Looking at my collection of ER PTTs, and Timetable World's collection of NER PTTs, I think the following were loco hauled up to the end:

5.20am Malton-Whitby
8.55am Whitby-York
3.35pm York-Whitby
6.54pm Whitby-Malton

It seems fairly clear that D259 worked at least one of these on the last day, but did it work all of them? The most likely place for a loco swap would be at York. Are there any pictures of the 3.35pm York-Whitby before dark?

I don't have a copy of this. Annoyingly I've done two research trips this week and could have consulted a copy on both. I think it is the "go to" source for answering this question.

I do wish that all lines had closed in the summer when the days are long. There's too many instances of lines closing in winter ad the last trains running after dark!

I did find a picture of a Class 40 which is possibly D259 before dark. I'm sure it hauled all of the services on that day except the Whitby Moors Rail Tour which was hauled by K1 62005 and K4 3442 "The Great Marquess"

Definitely York and not just Malton?
Yes as you said, the last train terminated at Malton. But the 8.55am train in the first picture terminated at York.

Yes - so I may have been wrong in assuming the same loco hauled both trains.
OTOH it was generous provision for those services (I would have expected a Type 2) so I assume it was a last day arrangement and there would be no reason toswap locos. Added to the comment on a photo upthread...

A simple thought. I don’t know what normally happened to the coaches off the 6.54 p.m. Whitby on a Saturday, but it would be quite possible that they were usually diagrammed to stable at Malton until Monday. However, they wouldn’t be needed the following Monday so they could quite possibly have been worked away to somewhere like York by extending the 6.54 p.m., either as ecs or as an unadvertised passenger. There probably wasn’t any urgent goods awaiting departure at Malton.
