I wonder how the rail unions will view a two-year situation stated in your last sentence above?
You're optimistic if you believe it's going to be two years until the next General Election! The Tories know that they can't win an election now, and it's just going to be worse next year.

That statement does not answer the question that I posed.

Despite all that has occurred in the Johnson era and his subsequent removal as Prime Minister, with a long process leading to his replacement, I still personally feel that the new administration will soldier on. It will not be in their nature to just hand over the reins of power, just to fit in with the political agenda of an opposition party.

Given labour want to privatise again, what are peoples thoughts on what would happen to the freight side?

If there was no money in July for Labour to nationalise everything, there definitely is none now!
Labour has accepted the OBR estimate of £55 billion as the "black hole" that needs to be filled by tax rises or funding cuts.
Jeremy Hunt has also skewed the actions he took to bite more severely from 2 years hence, just as the next government comes in.
And the public sector settlement of 2% will not stop the industrial unrest on the railways.

I'm sure money will be tight but the treasury will make a lot of extra revenue from a renationalised railway. Seems like a no brainer and as they will be bringing contracts in house as they expire there can't be a huge upfront cost.

I don't know about extra revenue, but a single nationalised owner will reduce the amount of money that disappears in management fees, etc.
