Putin's terrible but if there was one person over here with the skills of diplomacy required to avoid ww3 then Truss would be nowhere near the top of the list. Come to think of it, she wouldn't even be on the list!

Do you remember that hilarious spitting image sketch of how John Major ended up as PM? I think it started with him starting with him being the new boy on the ground floor but within a day the supervisor on the 2nd floor quit so he was fast promoted to this role. The next day the bloke on the 3rd floor had a heart attack so with no one else about to take his place, up stepped JM to become a manager. Later that day the boss on the 4th floor slipped and fell out of the window so within a couple of days JM somehow found himself in charge of a big company by default. Yet compared to Truss, JM was in a different league altogether even though he was ultimately seen as incompetent, surreptitious and untrustworthy.

How on Earth did the UK end up with Truss in charge is one of those questions that will be asked over and over.

And yes, agree that the Euro is hardly doing well either. At what point do the pound and Euro dip below the dollar?

Well I do remember the 'grey man' portrayal if not that specific sketch you mention. Never voted for the Tories but I'd replace Truss with him in an instant if that was the only choice.

Hang on thats the city where they want its bankers to have unlimited bonuses because they do so much for the economy
I think they only wanted the bankers to have unlimited bonuses last week because they (wrongly) thought that this was what the bankers wanted, and that by giving them what they wanted they would effectively have bought their undying gratitude. It's fair to say that bankers really want to be able to stay in their extremely well-paid jobs however, and that this is considerably harder if there isn't an operational economy and there are collapsed pension funds all over the shop

It isn't great if you've invested in hedge funds that now own property, restaurants, bars, clubs, supermarket chains and so on.

I understand much of this is down to the strength of the dollar - under 'Sleepy Joe' Biden!
Well the pound has also dropped against nearly every other currency in the world. Is that Biden as well?

Truss has broken cover, she is doing a round of interviews... on BBC local radio.

If IMF and the Bank of England both try and intervene, you have to know you've done something wrong? So why don't they? it seems as if they are purposely trying to screw everybody over?

The only people with the ability to stop this junta are the conservative MP's themselves.

They need to ask a serious question of themselves - do they serve their constituents and their country, or do they only exist to serve the party.

The two posts I quoted were mainly about the Euro, the pound is only mentioned in one. Whereby most countries' currencies have slipped against the dollar, I agree only the pound has required the desperation measures that we have seen. And given the dollar's strength and the number of key commodities that are sold in dollars, it was not the right time to be so 'adventurous'.

Liz Truss may be on local radio but Mark Carney, former Bank governor, has been on national radio.
Former Bank of England governor Mark Carney has accused the government of "undercutting" the UK's key economic institutions.

Mr Carney told the BBC the government's tax-cutting measures were "working at some cross-purposes" with the Bank.
He also pointed to a decision not to publish economic forecasts by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) alongside Friday's "mini-budget".
The budget sparked turmoil on financial markets and sent the pound sliding.
The Bank of England has been forced to step in to calm markets and on Wednesday said would buy £65bn of government bonds over the next fortnight in an attempt to restore stability.
Sterling hit a record low against the US dollar of around $1.03 on Monday. It has since risen to around $1.08 after the Bank's announcement.
Speaking to the BBC's Today programme, Mr Carney said that while the government was right to want to boost economic growth: "There is a lag between today and when that growth might come."
He said: "There was an undercutting of some of the institutions the underpin the overall approach - so not having an OBR forecast is much-commented upon and the government, I think, has accepted the need for that but that was important."

The OBR provides independent forecasts of the impact of government's plans on the economy as well as on public finances. The Treasury decided not to publish its forecasts on Friday, which fuelled market turmoil.
"Unfortunately having a partial budget, in these circumstances - tough global economy, tough financial market position, working at cross-purposes with the Bank - has led to quite dramatic moves in financial markets," Mr Carney said.
The Treasury has subsequently said the OBR will release a full forecast when Mr Kwarteng announces his medium-term fiscal plan on 23 November.
Mr Carney also said that the government's mini-budget showed it was "working at some cross-purposes with the Bank in terms of short-term support for the economy".
Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng unveiled the country's biggest tax package in 50 years on Friday. But the £45bn-worth of tax cuts has sparked concerns that government borrowing could surge along with rising interest rates.
The Bank has a target to keep inflation at 2%. But prices are rising at their fastest rate in four decades and the Bank has been lifting interest rates to cool inflation. However, since the mini-budget, some economists believe interest rates could rise faster and higher, to as much as 6% by next May.
That is pretty severe criticism for a former Bank governor.

Truss has popped out of her bunker and gone on BBC local radio no doubt hoping for an easy ride. Seems she is getting something of a kicking and looking completely out of touch and uncaring.

If we swapped the local radio presenters and mainstream journalists around, the country would be in a much better place than it currently is.

Apparently "The Remainer City" is to blame as well.

The UK is now an international laughing stock.
"The Remainer City"? London, in other words?

The arrogance of the Government and those that support the Government knows no bounds.

It's always someone else's fault, never the UK Government's.

On another point (and just intended as a general observation) we do seem to have a Cabinet of very young people, relatively speaking.

Struggling to find a prominent cabinet member born before 1970. Johnson gone obviously. Shapps gone. Javid gone. Hunt failed to comeback. Dorries gone (no bad thing, lol). Anyone left?

Contrast to that of May (born 1956) featuring Hammond (born 1955) for instance, the average age of senior cabinet members seems to have plummeted in the past five years!

She will now sack her Director of Communications

It was a spectacularly bad idea to put her in front of a bunch of journalists who aren’t beholden to the government for ongoing access to ministers and who are probably a lot closer to “normal people” than the likes of Nick Robinson or Robert Peston

What they thought would be an easy ride turned out to be anything but

Wondering about the Tory conference next week. Can we expect a new "Back to Basics" campaign to distract us all?

That would be as disasterous as John Major's campaign. Tories just don't think that they are bound by the rules that they spout for the electorate.

This morning was simply embarassing. Donald Duck would probably give me more confidence as a leader right now. Here's some particulalry bad soundbites...

It's all automated garbage isn't it? It's a bit like listening to "Please ensure you take all your personal belongings....etc" on loop.

People scared stiff (and that's not an understatement) of recieving their mortgage and energy bills, pensioners now worried about their pensions, and if the government is to frack it's way out of this mess then how do they bypass local areas that don't want it - which will basically be all?

Maybe Liz Truss is a bit...what's the word..."thick"?

She actually makes Boris look clever. Not something I'd ever thought I'd think!

Robotic. Zero empathy, vacuous. Then again, can anyone name a current Tory that could carry us through this crisis?

To be honest Boris was extremely intelligent in general, and the buffoonery was a bit of a mask for that. Although his emotional intelligence was somewhat lacking...

Truss just seems to be devoid of all forms of intelligence though. It's a slow moving car crash.

Allow me to quantify this please.

This Gov't has a "world beating " track record of achievement in this respect having commenced with the arrival of pasty chops Dave and the smirking knife George with their "austerity " programme....a few cuts to Local Gov't funding, thus transferring the onus and blame for cuts onto Local Authorities and away from themselves, also followed and one Dept, the DWP, have long excelled when it comes to screwing benefits recipients over, so, yes, anybody who isn't a Tory donor and / or in the 1% bracket so generously looked after in the "fiscal event ", a neat choice of words to avoid, as I understand, the legal definition of a budget has indeed been screwed over.

Thankfully, due to an unprecedented combination of arrogance and stupidity, Truss and Kwarteng to save any confusion, this state of affairs has just imploded in their avaricious faces.

It's possible I may not be a Tory supporter you all understand.

They have no "access" to protect so have nothing to lose by going in hard. The PM wont be back on Radio Leeds or Tees or Stoke anytime soon.

Look these interviews out. The PM got an absolute shoeing. Car crash. Silence at times in which you can hear the very small cogs in the brain of Truss desperately grinding.

It was a spectacularly bad idea to put her in front of a bunch of journalists who aren’t beholden to the government for ongoing access to ministers and who are probably a lot closer to “normal people” than the likes of Nick Robinson or Robert Peston
