Hi all :(

In case anyone hasn't realised, today is the 14th of February. And that means one thing: Valentine's Day is here. This is the one day I dread more than all others in any given year (beating even Hallowe'en, which at least can be amusing in the right circumstances). And this year, as highlighted here, it's worse than ever from my perspective. I have just had one of the worst weeks of my life, resulting in seeing the same welfare advisor three times (plus a text message on Sunday), and am on some kind of medicine (I forget its name; it's *not* Sertraline because I've just come off of that).

And every year, it's the same story...
- Person A: Oh, hi! How are things? Got a Valentine this year?
- Person B: Hey, pal! Sure do. It'll be great. And you?
- Person A: Same here, mate. Not sure what to do yet though.
...And so on. And then you get to Person C.
- Person A: And you? How are things with you today?
- Person C: [no audible response; tears visible]

I have had it up to about my eyebrows with this day. Yes, I know, it comes only once a year. But it couldn't come at a worse time of year! I just wish that someone out there would actually appreciate this...

And my housemate has just said, "No wild parties!" to me. That says a lot, doesn't it?

Anyhow, rant over. Maybe next year I'll have a different perspective on this... or, then again, I could be realistic and know that I won't, and that my circumstances won't be any different. I know this isn't the right place to be venting about relationships, but... it's like no-one understands me any more outside of a select few...

Oh, and look what I found from last year (lousy photographic memory <(): http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=30430

P.S.: If NeilAH reads this, sorry I haven't been around as I said. Partly due to the above, my sleeping pattern has been thrown off again. Instead, I'm playing OpenTTD at 3am every day...

Whilst I appreciate (I think) your frustration, it is only one day a year, and for people in a relationship, particularly with young family, to focus on each other. It isn't all easy street in a relationship, despite how it may seem on the outside for this day. Often between working long hours and bathing the kids, and all the housework required, whilst you may find yourself sleeping together very often, rarely will you be awake in bed to enjoy anything (if the baby sleeps).

But I'm sure Mother's Day and Father's Day must be hard for people who don't know both of their parents. My Mom and Dad won't like it this year, as my Dad's Mom and my Mom's Dad have died within two months of each other.

Valentine's day is just a day to make single people feel bad.

I tend to ignore it, which is fine because I don't really have that much contact with other people most of the time.
I broke up with my bf a few days ago, so paying even less attention to it than ususal (If I hadn't seen this thread, I wouldn't have remembered )

That's one way of looking at it, another is that is a day to make people in a relationship feel good. As I said above, it's not all roses and sweetness the rest of the time.

What I've never understood is that couples have 364/5 perfectly good days to express their love. Valentine's implies if you put in the effort on one day you can be a censored for the rest of the year

The whole thing is pretty silly really, but harmless enough as long as those who want to enjoy it can do, and those who don't want to bother aren't pressurised. I've been married/in the same relationship for about 18 years now, and simply cannot see the point of Valentine's for my own situation. Relationships are a right mixed bag, and depending how it's going at any one time, a lot of chat about romance is as likely to cause one's eye to rove as it is to make one focus on a long term partner IMHO (and experience!).

I presume you feel the same about birthdays, anniversaries, Mother's Day, Father's Day an many other annual one-day events (you'd be a hypocrite if you don't). That race for life must annoy you, people only being bothered to raise money for charity once every year the lazy sods.

Well the missus got a card and some flowers from me and was happy with that. I got a card and a box of Malteasers off her so I was happy too. We're not into the commercial side of the day and the wife cannot eat out at the moment due to an impending operation so a nice night in me thinks.... sounds like a normal night to be honest...

I do see Valentine's Day as utterley pointless. It is a day designed to make people part with their money with gifts for loved ones, and make single and depressed people even sadder, sorry to hear of the depression, Ivo. I have no time for it, and to be fair, if ypou have to rely on one day alone to show truly your love for your partner, then doesn't that say something about the state of your relationship, surely you should do what you do today everyday?

Tonight, i shall be playing FIFA 11 and listening to Black Sabbath, and, to be honest, that is better than some Valentine's Day bullsh*t.

Oh good, another morbid response for the morbid singletons thread (Ivo, I'm saying that collectively, not aimed at you).

Open question to all those who've mentioned about not showing your love for one special day and that there's all the other days. Do you get cards/presents for your parents on their respective days?

I am curious because if you do that surely means you are massively contradicting yourselves. After all, if you love your Mom and/or Dad that much, why should you only make an effort on one day of the year?

I don't see the connection between doing Valentine's things and not being romantic for the rest of the year though, it is possible (as I do) to do both easily. It's like suggesting Christians celebrate Christmas so they don't have to bother going to church for the rest of the year.

Surely that's actually true for some "Christians"? ;)

Anyway, being single is definately not worth getting depressed about.

My parents chose me and have put up with me for the past 19 years, so I usually get them something.
I don't mind that kind of stuff for valentine's day, but it's the fact that it's become so commercialised and it's everywhere, as if to rub it in. I have the same opinion of mother's day and father's day.

It's like suggesting Christians celebrate Christmas so they don't have to bother going to church for the rest of the year.

To be fair, for some that is true :D

I didn't get the missus a card this year, instead I posted off my divorce papers to the court today. :D

Ah, Barlow, now that was a cracker - and also, I suspect, a deliberate homage to East Enders for their recent mention of Corrie in an Enders episode. I don't watch Enders but I'm sure they did a virtually idential scenario once didn't they?

The only trick Corrie missed tonight was they forgot to stuff the actor's cheeks with cotton wool during the scenes where he was preparing for what he did! Don Peto Barleone, perchance?!

All this about Valentines day? How much has it actually impacted you. I haven't noticed anything special or different about today at all. Was just a normal working day. Woke up and opened my curtains to find the BT logo was replaced with a heart, and my local restaurant has strung out pink balloons and stuck hearts in the window, but not felt bad or any different from any normal day!

In fact had a really good evening with a friend on my way back from the dry cleaners :s

Much like Peter Barlow in tonight's corrie...

Way to spoil it. I've been asleep since about 5pm, so I haven't seen it yet...

Never mind ;)

And yes Mojo; all this about VD. How do you think I felt last year? This year it was worse because I had been waiting on a girl for nearly 3 months, only to be told barely a week before the 14th that she had started seeing someone else.

EDIT: Seen it now. This is what happens when (a) your sleep is messed up, and (b) you are relying on ITV Player. And I think Peter is referring to Den Watts at Christmas in I believe 1986 (I could be wrong; I've only ever intentionally watched 'Enders once, 20 years later to the day).

Sorry Ivo, but do still watch it - what has been posted here hasn't given away just how brilliant it was, and in any case it was an open secret he was going to exact his revenge at the blessing.

So because of this everybody else should not celebrate Valentine's Day, just because things have gone a bit tits up for you?

You aren't going to find yourself a Valentine very easily unless you grow a pair, after all, that's the bit of us women are after (apart from our wallets :))

I'm sorry, but this quote takes on a whole new meaning with the abbreviation "VD" in it.

 I guess the stamp on the letter is cheaper than a card

Ivo, if you don't already know, you may want to look at this link (from wikipedia; it's safe!).

Um... And that matters because?

I'm sorry, but this quote [mine relating to Mojo's point] takes on a whole new meaning with the abbreviation "VD" in it.

And why does the use of the abbreviation "VD" matter?

(Honestly, I don't know.)

And thanks to TP for the picture in his new signature. Not. (Sorry )

VD stands for Venereal Disease in older medical terms, i.e. a Sexually Transmitted Infection in modern parlance.

Oh. Whoops. My mistake...! :|

To be perfectly honest, it went better than I had feared. I actually managed a hug for once (*gasp*). Although, having said that, this girl is a Muslim (I think), and would thus not be expected (or probably even advised) to "celebrate" Valentine's Day.

Don't be sorry. It raised a chuckle this end. I'd be wary of Valentines Day myself if it always ended up in a dose :D
