Hi, is there a way to tell which ICE services are scheduled to be operated by which type of ICE? (ICE1,2,3,4)

I would like to take a trip to Germany to ride on some ICEs but want to plan in advance which type of sets I'll be able to experience.

Thanks!

If you want live allocations, try Bahn Expert (https://bahn.expert/).
Click on or search for a station, click on a train and details will show for many giving the train type or, if loco hauled, the loco allocated.
Note that it doesn't show allocations in some areas or for some train types but seems pretty good for ICE.

Currently in ICE land, and these links will be useful.

I made the mistake of traveling on an IC train Berlin to Dresden; four miserable double deck coaches not fit for purpose. No space for luggage--so it is stored in the aisles.

That was my journey yesterday! Although usually busy, I go for the Prague trains armed with a seat reservation. Most are Czech stock and have an excellent restaurant car too.

And are loco hauled (CD Vectron) unlike the double deck sets, which I assume are the ex-Westbahn Stadler KISS sets.

Does anyone know what the seats in the Bombardier Twindexx IC2s are? They have the same seat coverings as the ICEs, but I'm fairly sure they are a different seat as they are smaller.

Berlin-Dresden IC2 is decker flirts (when they can get enough that actually work), IC2+loco is 5-car sets but don’t work that route
Decker FLIRT = KISS. The DB examples are somewhat bizarrely still maintained in Austria, which is not going to be a recipe for reliability (see also EMR Desiros at Northampton).

There are multiple workings to cycle them through home base. Warnemünde to Wien is 12hr or something overnight, and I understand a similar service is to exist for Stuttgart soon too.

Was trying to decide between the 1626 or 1716 Berlin to Dresden departures. Took the 1626 (dis) service which was late. Arrived about 10 minutes ahead of the 1716 arrival into Dresden N. Yes, that looked to be the superior train. Will take that next time.

@306024: are you in town for the steam festival?

Are those through passenger services?

There could be a similar problem (or opportunity?) in a couple of years when the ICE depot in Cottbus opens. Perhaps the timetables could be fixed so that ICEs going for service take passengers instead of running empty from Berlin or Dresden.

The ICs take the diversion via BER airport, the ECs towards CZ do not and will always be quicker.
I gather the Dresdnerbahn route has at last started its long-promised upgrade.

Cottbus is a heavy maintenance facility with 2 roads, so not likely to produce many workings. Located there as part of a "levelling up" agenda. :)

Not on that route, these are ex-Westbahn Stadler KISS units, with the same seat model as in first class on our own Class 800s.
I've not ridden a KISS before, but from the seat plans and photographs on vagonWeb I have to say they look quite decent inside. Decent size windows, few poorly aligned seats, not too crammed in - though I can absolutely agree that there's a difference between the layout you need for a two-hour shuttle (say, between Salzburg and Wien even) and the layout you need for a long-distance slog with high passenger turnover and lots of luggage.

Also bizarrely (or maybe not) the one in the vagonWeb photos is shown on the Swiss register.

I thought they were rather nice for a trip on Westbahn (only an hour or so, but I'd happily have been on it for longer).

As far as I could find, they were already registred in Switzerland during their Westbahn time. Maybe due to one of the companies that owns Westbahn is Swiss? Or being leased from Switzerland?

I've just looked at a photo of one which I took at Wien Hbf in April. The full number on the first vehicle is visible and digits 3 & 4 which show the country code are '85' which means that it is indeed registered in Switzerland.

Yes, exactly, they look more than decent enough for that sort of thing, but I can accept that the experience would be different if there were to be a lot of luggage and churn.

Oh, I'd never noticed that. Thanks for doing the research!

Yes, they are registered in CH as they were when working for Westbahn. No idea why but of course one of the main founders of Westbahn was Benedikt Weibel, former CEO of SBB and the trains were built by Stadler in Thurgau, so maybe they are still (technically) leased through a Swiss concern? Nice trains and provide much-needed extra capacity for DB FV.
