Just had a brief from ScotRail advising they are refunding walkup tickets without a fee during the mourning period, book with confidence covers Advance. I expect every TOC to do the same.
RDG brief expected Monday, awaiting some decisions from the DfT.

You might be able to get a refund under a force majeure clause (Latin term, but is used as exceptional, outside control of either party). Nearly every legal contract has this term. A period of National mourning is not foreseeable so is likely to be covered.

A decision by the governing body to call off a football match is not force majeure.

.....and in any event the overwhelming majority of commercial contracts that I've been familiar with over the last 30 years (and there are a lot) exclude force majeure

I too was planning a London trip today for football with an overnight hotel stay. I tend to buy Advanced Tickets & hotels as often a big saving, I can’t get a refund on the rail ticket or hotel.

The sad passing of The Queen aside I have several Advanced tickets booked (& a couple of hotel stays) right up to end of November but thinking in future it’s not wise to buy advanced what with engineering works & strikes (I know there are options on rail tickets to amend or get a refund re strikes)

EDIT: even though calling Southern Customer Services & being told I can change for a £10 fee it appears as ‘Travel with Confidence’ that is in place to 30th September I can in fact exchange for a voucher for use in the future, thanks to info from a rail colleague, shows what Southern CS know :s

As you appear to have now learned, Book with Confidence is your friend and there is a growing expectation that it will be extended beyond the current end date of 30th September. But remember you must apply before 18:00 on the day before travel.
