Match called off, Trainpal won't refund

On Monday I bought tickets from Alton to Yate and back for Winchester City's away match there via Trainpal. Today it was announced that the match has been called off. Trainpal won't refund my ticket between Reading and Yate because it was an advance ticket and will only refund the Alton to Reading one on condition of helping themselves to £6 of it. Is there anywhere I can go from here to get my money back?

Unfortunately there is unlikely to be anything you can do about this. Advances are generally non-refundable, unless the reason you're no longer travelling is down to something the railway has (or hasn't) done, such as cancelling or delaying your train. And walk-up tickets have an admin fee of up to £10.

Whether those terms are fair and enforceable, particularly the latter (given that the true administration costs are unlikely to come close to £10), is another matter. But for the sake of a relatively small sum I doubt it's going to be worth your while trying to fight that battle.

The one option you do have is to change the date and time of your tickets for free, under the Book with Confidence scheme. So you could change them to a future date if you think the match might be rescheduled. However, this has to be done by 6pm the day before travel in order to be fee-free.

Are Trainpal taking part in BwC?

Couldn't get that when I Googled it!
It was one of the first results when I searched "trainpal book with confidence"!

Looks like they're only doing fee-free changes though and not vouchers, so not fully taking part.
Yes, although it's worth noting that they're not the only retailer in that position.

And that fee-free change is less useful as we get closer to the date the scheme is due to end.
I don't follow. The end of the scheme (if it isn't extended again) simply means that you will no longer be able to make changes after that date. There's nothing which says your revised travel date must be before the end of September.

If you don't know the new date (and/or the football isn't re-arranged for a date that is available to book), you could end up with a ticket for a date when you won't want to use it. Ideally though, BwC will be extended or, better still, made permanent.

I'm in a similar situation and on raileasy it gives the option of cancelling because of a bereavement.. So if my relative had died and the event wasn't cancelled i could cancel the ticket but when the queen dies and the event is cancelled I can't..?
Given the thousands of people who will be in this situation with everything being cancelled, it feels like they should do something. Of course they won't. And loads of everyday people lose money as usual

Raileasy also offer Book with Confidence (in some form, at least).

There are loads of different reasons a football match may be cancelled, postponed or somehow changed. Using Advances to get to one is not prudent unless you are willing to "self-insure".

Why not change the ticket to a date you're free and have a day out?

That's what I'm wondering genuinely. Even if it were to go ahead many would not choose to go because they're mourning anyway. So I genuinely do think something should be considered

As maybe, but this isn't just one
, it's everything in the entire country being cancelled at the same time with 1 days notice

Have you actually contacted Raileasy to discuss your circumstances?

Does book with confidence only allow one free date change, or (if the scheme is still active) can a date be changed multiple times?

If yes, is there an option to change the date to an arbitrary future date, and then change it again when the match is rescheduled?

(Although any rearranged date is likely to be a midweek, will the ticket type still be valid?)

Book with Confidence allows changes to be made (subject to payment of any difference in fares) but only until the scheme ends (as currently known) on 30th September. Multiple changes would seem to be fine prior to that date. For retailers offering a refund to eVouchers there is more flexibility as the eVouchers last for 12 months.

If the ticket is a Weekend Super Off Peak (for example), then it is not covered by Book with Confidence as it is refundable. Most ticket types are valid on all days.

Again that's something that depends by retailer. Some are allowing fee-free changes to the date of walk-up tickets. Of course this leads to rather a problem if you have a weekend-only ticket and now want to travel on a weekday...

Do they not have to refund it if it is a walkup ticket? Not that I'm sure why you'd book a walkup ticket in advance anyway

Yes, but standard email auto response saying they're busy.. Still waiting on a response from my last attempt in July so not holding out much hope

Newcastle United supporters are being offered a refund in the form of eVouchers for the West Ham match if they booked with LNER and make their claim before 1800 on Saturday.

I tried to change it (League has a blank weekend on 11th March so it's thought that it would be moved to then) but it says my tickets can't be moved either.

What type of ticket do you have, and who did you book with?

It was an anytime day return (AON-RDG) and two advance singles (RDG-YAT)
So, a refundable Anytime Day return, and two Advance tickets which are covered by Book with Confidence. Contact whoever sold you the tickets.

Is the new date unknown yet?

If not you could amend the tickets to another date, and amend again, when the date is known, for no fee. This should work providing the new date is known before 'book with confidence ' ends.

Just a quick note here that we're looking into refunds for events affected by yesterday's news on a case-by-case basis - where possible we're asking that people use our self-service refunds site to take advantage of the Book with Confidence scheme if you've booked with Trainsplit and have another booking (or intend to make one - you can defer your ticket even if you don't have a booking already) of equal or greater value, to minimise the amount of incoming requests and keep response times to a minimum, but if you'd particularly like a refund considering the circumstances, please drop us an email and we can take a look.

Certainly a wait that long isn't normal- could you email us again if the issue is still outstanding please (and also regarding the new refund request) and we'll make sure it's looked into as soon as we can?
