I'm seeing that TV & radio are going to be disrupted for at least a week which is a disgrace. Are they really that deluded that they think people want to watch constant mourning and not get any escapism? Especially at a time where the cost of living is going up and things are difficult for a lot of people.

So it should, in my humble opinion. This is an event of utmost gravity for our country, and to be honest much of the world. As said, there are plenty of other avenues to "escape" it. The death of the one constant in British culture that hasn't been corrupted or ruined (I'm talking about the Queen herself here, not the monarchy) is something that deserves a prolonged period of reflection. It really will be the end of an era for this country, and I'm not sure we will completely recover from her loss.

Reading the Grauniad article, I see that although Radios 1, 2 and 4 have their schedules altered, Radio 3 doesn’t, although I would expect there to be a lot of scrutinising of which pieces are played. It is also the Last Night of the Proms, that celebratory ‘Festival of Britishness’, this weekend, which is going to create a dilemma: cancel, radically alter or continue as near normal.

Whilst I accept that it's a private family affair being covered by a media circus, when there's a royal birth if it happens as noon they don't announce it until several hours later. I wonder if this is the case that she might've passed away already yet they're not telling us, especially given the remote location and the family not all being there yet.

I think this might be ever so slightly over the top!

BBC 3CR seem still not to have even noticed, with Roberto Perrone still putting out the usual fairly upbeat afternoon show.

It's my opinion that she has already passed and it will be announced at 6pm.

Huw Edwards has been brought in, and dressed appropriately for making an announcement. There is a huge amount of activity going on in the background of the BBC's newsroom too.

None of this is normal, and all of that is expected from what we know of the plans. The entire nature of the main broadcasters is preparing viewers for an announcement, rather than (what we've had previously) she's a bit poorly but will almost certainly be ok. They're clearly waiting for an official word.
Does he normally present the 10pm news only?

The original plan (in place for many, many moons), is that the Queen's passing would be announced around 9am on the morning following her passing.

These things can always change, of course..!

Dunno if I've already posted this, but I'm off to jersey pride this weekend involving a flight, and the organisers have a message that "the Queen insisted that events carry on as normal" so I'm expecting a fun weekend with the right sort of mix of sombriety and celebration of her life.

But tonight on my team's messageboard, they have an away fixture and both sides are in limbo as to whether it should be called off now to save the away team/fans travelling.

He's their most senior presenter, while his normal role is the 10pm news, he is also used for all sorts of coverage where a senior presenter is needed, particularly state & major political news. He doesn't present random Thursday afternoons (and likely wouldn't have even been working when this story broke).

If she had already died then ITV wouldn't be running normal content.

I personally don't think so

Almost nobody lives past 100. 96 is a distinguished old age, particularly as she's seemingly had full faculties for all of it. It's very different to the tragic and unexpected death of a younger person before their time e.g. Diana. If she doesn't pass today, she will in the next ~5 years.

And I think the suggestion the UK can never recover is both defeatist and quite disrespectful to Charles.

I am deeply saddened by the news, but say carry on as normal until there is an official announcement

They would - not least because they have nothing to broadcast currently other than aimless speculation, but also that once the news is announced they will inevitable cease advertising for a period of time, cutting off their primary income. For all the commercial broadcasters, it's better to carry on as normal as long as they can, and they don't have to do anything until an announcement is made.

Edit: And as soon as I post that, I start hearing that ITV are suspending programming from 5pm, replacing it with open ended news coverage.

No worries - that's your view and you are welcome to it - mine is that you are lacking perspective. To say the country will never recover from the loss of the Queen is nonsense of the highest order. I will agree it is the end of an era but the monarch has had many era.

Huw is the top guy ( it used to be Dimbleby) so they have go him just in case as per the plan. Someone has clearly pressed the button. perhaps not the panic button but certainly the we don't want our junior afternoon news reader in a burgundy tie if the worst happens button

I'm baffled as to why they all changed to black so quickly. If anyone came to visit me in hospital and my family were all wearing black, I'd be mortified!! *Whoa there, I'm still here!!!*
That is totally disrespectful, and they should wait until there is an official announcement.

Rather a shame if she doesn't beat Louis XIV's record for longest-reigning monarch ever, at least for those whose dates we can verify. She'd need to live another couple of years to do that, which seems increasingly unlikely. She'll remain second, still an incredible record.

But then a lot of that time for Louis XIV was taken up when he was underage and had a regent, so in many ways she's already beaten that in 'real' terms.

That is surprising and may be an error. From what I read about the protocol suitable clothing is kept ready and is meant to be donned for the announcement.

Most likely they expected the inevitable news to break suddenly, or sooner than now. Remember they were completely wrong-footed by the announcement of Philip's death by the Palace online rather than by following the agreed protocols, resulting in junior presenters reading out the announcements while they tried to get everything in order.

My point is that we are already very much a changed country, and the Queen is the final link to our more glorious past. Once Charles is in, things will be very very different, and more in line with where our politicians are taking us. Which, if you follow my postings, you'll know I'm very pessimistic about.

I've just had a text from a friend who works in the media. He says this, and he's a good friend who's not one for hyperbole: "I'm getting from multiple sources in media that she's already dead. Announcement to come at either 5 or 6pm." Obviously there's a chance he's at the end of Chinese whispers, but given the black suits on BBC it seems to fit.

The Monarch has no way to limit or control the political direction of this country.

EDIT - TBH Charlie MORE likely to try to interfere in politics than his mother!

My most significant concern is that Her Majesty might end up along the lines of both my grandmothers:
In bed, they were going in and out of their faculties, going slowly insane, possibly for a full year, before passing away.

We've been expecting and preparing for her passing for some time already, but I do question something:
- Are we ready to bear witness to a full year of the Queen going through this palliative process as well?

I cant imagine that would be allowed. See George V.
