Nah, trust me, Italy is even worse. And Greece...

Buses seem pretty comprehensive in urban areas in Italy, and fares are cheap. They also allow you to change between different modes of transport using a single ticket like in most of Europe. That's not the case in the UK. Maybe a different story in rural areas. Britain has historically spent money on rural buses to keep them going but ignored city buses, which are (were?) supposed to be self-financing.

Where you did you get that idea? It has long had one of the worst reputations in Europe. Nowhere else in western Europe and probably most of the rest of Europe funds buses less.

Not exactly on topic (but from experience, there are exemplars in Western Europe - Netherlands, Germany but also less impressive when you look at other areas like Spain and Portugal).

Much of the issue in the UK is a toxic mix of increasing costs, a massive shortage of drivers, and a shift where 20% of passengers have disappeared.

I have lived in Italy for half of my life so far.

Buses are ok in cities. Reasonably frequent with fairly priced integrated tickets. But most of the time, they rarely bother turning up, sometimes without notice. I have once been victim, in Naples, of a bus not turning up without notice, and I was forced to get the metro as a result.

Rural areas, a completely different story. Buses effectively only exist to transport students into school, even in large villages which have a population of 4,000-5,000 and usually use step entrance coaches that don't have wheelchair access. Whilst in the UK, all local services always use low floor accessible buses, and as it rightly should be so.

Now the UK isn't perfect, absolutely. Dual doors almost completely absent outside of London, Brighton, York, Bristol and Bath, even in big cities like Birmingham and Manchester, leading to increased dwell times making journeys inefficient. But at least the buses do turn up and are reasonably frequent. Ok, they're no use for rural routes, but necessary on city.

Integration does exist in the UK however. Nottingham for example has the £5.60 Robin Hood ticket which allows travel on any bus, tram and train in the city. Bristol also has something similar for about £8, can't remember what it's called tho.

Daily and longer tickets like that exist throughout the UK. Nottingham is nothing special in that regard. But there is almost no integration for single tickets. With a few exceptions, you can't even change buses without getting another ticket.

I'm pretty sure everywhere in Europe, if not the whole world, is like that. If you need to use more than one bus then you buy a day or multitrip ticket which allows you to travel on any bus you want or need to catch

You can certainly change buses in Italian cities on the same single ticket. Certainly the ones I've been in. The typical rule in much (most?) of Europe is that a single ticket allows you unlimited travel for a certain time period, maybe 60 or 90 minutes.

This exists in the UK too, or at least at my local bus company (Go Ahead Metrobus Crawley).

You can buy a 60 minute ticket (albeit on mobile only)

That's a very exceptional case. London is of course another example. But that only started a few years ago. And some people here want to scrap the so-called "Hopper Fare" to save money. You still can't change from bus to tube on a single fare, unlike Italian cities.

Worst reputations to whom exactly? Europhile bus enthusiasts?

Changing buses without buying another ticket for single fares is not exactly the main factor of comparisons between bus systems. One factor possibly. Inter alia, coverage, frequency, information provision, comfort, capacity, fare levels (in the round), reliability are others too. The UK does not do too bad on many of these.

Exactly. Italy and Greece are much worse than the UK. And I say it from a person who has lived in Italy for half of his life, and has visited Greece at least 4 times in his entire life

First Worcester not Stagecoach.
Stagecoach don't have any services in Birmingham and haven't for many years and of course neither do First anymore.
NXWM 144A runs Longbridge - Bromsgrove only.
Diamond Walsall - Lichfield 35's last day is today I think, X16 Birmingham - Tamworth estates was yesterday.

On the other hand NX enhance the 28 from every 15 mins back to every 12 from early October.

Kinchbus Loughborough are struggling . Cuts to No 2 and Skylink Derby which are omitting villages (Long Whatton &Disewortj) from next month. No 2 will no longer run to Leicester, terminating at Sileby.
Villages such as Sileby,Barrow and Cossington lose their Leicester connections Post COVID is really affecting Kinchbus

There appear to be some First cuts in West Yorkshire on the horizon. Looking at the registration details on BusTimes these could include the X84 between Otley and Ilkley and the 308 between Honley and Holmfirth. The West Yorkshire forum suggests some deeper cuts but they aren't on here (eg 539, 571 also the 615/6/9 network west of Bradford) and also the X98/99 expected to go to Transdev as noted on that thread. Too early to be sure though. There were lots of cuts mooted in Manchester that haven't yet seen the light of day.

It's the ongoing lack of drivers that is killing Kinchbus. Very poor reliability.

I'd be suprised if Transdev aren't eyeing up the 173/174 too to further their way into Wakefield. As for the First West Yorkshire cuts, the services that are likely to be binned would be the short workings e.g. the 308 shorts between Huddersfield and Honley could be lost but the full length route retained. Unless First WY are looking at merging routes to try and make use of what they have already got.

This crew shortage isn't a new thing.
This from 1950 Halifax corporation transport timetable. This is the text in the message:

DUE TO SERIOUS STAFF SHORTAGE IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO CANCEL CERTAIN SERVICES WITHOUT WARNING. THIS WILL APPLY PARTICULARLY ON SATURDAY EVENINGS

Indeed, after an 11 week long strike at Liverpool Corporation in 1968, quite a few services remained suspended (some services ended up being withdrawn) until well after the PTE took over, because of staff shortage, as a lot of staff left during the strike.

Imo, operators are allowed to put up an emergency timetable, & should do so, put up a timetable for the services that they can operate, it's not good to have long gaps (sometimes 3 hour gap) in the timetable because of short notice cancellations, because their is not enough staff to operate the service, Stagecoach have done this on Merseyside, & most services go back to the normal timetable from next week, other operators should follow suit.

Trouble is available crew numbers is volatile. A burst of drivers testing positive for covid can decimate rotas. Difficult to plan.

Fair point, but if operators know they're not going to operate a service in advance, they should publish a timetable for a service that they can operate, i'm not saying if drivers go down ill tomorrow or something, maybe if operator knows they're not getting drivers to operate the full service for at least a couple of weeks or more

Even when you do that, there's no guarantee that it comes through. Transdev are still losing journeys despite the revised timetables in Harrogate.

Arriva in Yorkshire also show cancellations for the 405 Selby to Doncaster and 408/409 Pontefract to Doncaster from 3 October, with a new service 51 covering the common areas between Norton and Doncaster (miles from any Arriva depot!). These would be significant losses if they were all withdrawn. The difficulty of course with funding these is that they cross the boundary between South and West Yorkshire where a lot of services have been cut as neither council wishes to subsidise - look how little crosses the boundary apart from the trunk route from Barnsley to Wakefield and some buses into Hemsworth from the south west - very little into Denby Dale or Holmfirth from the south and almost nothing from South Elmshall to Doncaster. So perhaps the future is bleak here...

As of last Sunday Stagecoach Oxford Route 200 (Banbury to Brackley, every 30 mins inc eves and Sundays) has been cut by half and the Sunday Service withdrawn. No changes to Route so the smaller villages eg Middleton Cheney and Chacombe are still served.
Locals are furious about the lack of notice they were given. School Children are having 2 hours added on to their day and One Person sats he will now have to pay £25 for a Taxi each night as there are no longer any Buses home for him as he finishes Work at 7pm...

Can the route from Barnsley to Wakefield really still be described as a ‘trunk route’? It was cut to just hourly earlier this year and there are no buses in the evening on the route.

Perhaps the complainants should be getting on to their local councillors, as I don't believe either Northamponshire Unitary authorities, or Oxfordshire, subsidise much in the way of bus services......

That is poor, this (it is the 500 not the 200) used to be a very busy route. It is mainly double deckers now but the lack of an evening service to Brackley and any Sunday service will reduce its attractiveness still further.

Think you mean the 500 (the 200 is Banbury to Daventry). I can recall perhaps 6/7 years ago that it was a 20 min frequency; I used to work locally and stay in Brackley (pre Covid) and I was surprised that there was a commercial evening service, and I'm kinda surprised there's still one if only to Middleton Cheney.

Northampton won't pay for anything other than with section 106 funding. Oxfordshire are only marginally better. Arguably Banbury depots' best route.

Personally that X10 should be replaced with an extended X17 (currently Matlock to Barnsley), as the current X10 is nothing more of a shell of its former self.
The X17 is long enough already (requiring a changeover in Sheffield or Chesterfield to use the full route). Maybe bring back the X32 or whatever it was called from Sheffield to Leeds?
