125mph will happen for 810's most likely north of Luton. Appreciate you are going off what he said - but he's wrong.

And (hopefully) the stretch from north of Elstree to south of St. Albans.

Two links.
The main "big link" (which was itself recently formed from two smaller links, and the Lincoln link.
That leaves only the Sheffield, and Local as the two main links that don't sign them.

Thanks for clarifying. It’s easy to lose track with what’s happening on the Mothership (or should I say the Death Star :)).

I’ve today seen one of the first new carriages for EMR’s new Hitachi fleet, seen outside at Hitachi’s Newton Aycliffe facility, carriage 4 from train 1 (810001), was undergoing some static testing with the bogies.

At least it seems like they fixed the recurring 80X problem with the windowless seats!

Seats which are nominally window seats, but in reality you only get a blank panel and not an actual window.
To explain, as these carriages are shorter than 80X, they don't have to taper at the ends to stay within the loading gauge. So the doors can slide towards the end of the carriage, rather than towards the saloon as they do in 80X, blocking the view from the end seats

It looks like there aren't any seat in that vehicle yet, as in seatless windows.
That picture also shows that there's still plenty of opportunity for seats to be sited such that the blank panel between the windows fall in the middle of the seats' occupants view.

How does that impact on the toilets or bike compartments which are in those areas where door will now slide?
Or does it not take up that much room?

There may be misaligned seats, yes. However what there won't be is narrow seats with no view at all next to the door pocket.

The space doesn't need to be as tapered in a 24m vehicle so is wider. The vehicle is near enough square like a 195/331 rather than tapered like an 800.

Thanks!!
What I did notice is 9 normal windows and 1 half size, would have thought would have made all the windows the same size.

This is an example of a GWR 800 wirh no window view. It's where the door slides back and forth. GWR would have been better popping a luggage rack in the space instead IMO

Hate to dash any hopes, but it looks like the last window on that carriage is a false one (with a wall behind it). You can see through all of them bar that one, which is just black.

Presumably that's where the toilet compartment is though? That doesn't really need a window.

... which is what LNER have done/are doing (in Standard anyway, on the 9-coach sets).

It'll be interesting to see if they really have solved the issue of seats and windows not matching up here.

I'm no expert, but with the camera being offset at an angle to the carriage, the blackness could be the internal bulkhead.

I believe they're talking about the one at the far right of the carriage, underneath what must be the destination display. There is a blanked-out space for a window there (to be fair, you can barely see it unless you zoom in).

Image shows an enlarged section of the photo from post #1263, with the aforementioned blanked-out window highlighted.

Looks like a window to me, it's too shiny to be blanked off. But if it is blanked off it's probably a luggage rack.

Other possibility as someone else said is that your view is offset, so you're seeing through the next window down on the far side.

For neatness of appearance, yes. For cost, no - it's easier and cheaper to use the same window panes as all the other units wherever possible, and then only use the smaller ones where actually necessary. Especially so if it means they can re-use bodyshell designs and jigs from the other classes in the areas with normal-size windows too.

Someone fancy telling Siemens that? I don't think the 185 has two windows the same size on the whole coach, and the Desiro City isn't far off as bad. Even 350s and 444s have a variety.

But yes, I agree, in terms of part stocks it makes sense to keep as many as possible to one standard size. Furthermore that size is the right one for a First Class bay, which means it's fixed by that unless you want to produce junk like most TGVs in which not even First Class has any aligned seats.

(In 1st the half-window can be an airline row with its own window like Mk4s have).

Oh no they're on a completely different planet most of the time, haha, though if my memory serves the 380s and 700-family have mostly each settled on two standard sizes.

(In 1st the half-window can be an airline row with its own window like Mk4s have).
Similarly, the half-length window immediately behind the cabs on 334s and 458s was a nice touch by Alstom.

Anyway, the overall point is that when you're modifying an existing design it's easier to add a differently-sized window only where necessary, rather than changing every single one.

Surprisingly not everyone hates them, though. I was recently on a not very busy LNER with lots of other seats available and a pair of lads got on at the far end, walked the length of the coach and plonked themselves in there, spending the journey, as expected, with their heads in their phones.

The windows are smaller than all
Previous 80X builds, so the design is new and different

Indeed they're perfect for those wanting to avoid the sun shining on screens. Or who like sitting out of the sun. What GWR shouldn't do though is allocate them to someone with a seat reservation, who might not be aware that they are getting a wall seat.

I had the same issue with a recent Boeing 737 flight, where I chose a window seat, wanting to be able to see out, and ended up next to a wall!

What I don't get at all is why no seating plans for anything (planes included) include showing the window positions! Maybe someone needs to set up a railway SeatGuru.
