So that means that out of the £270 Virgin asked for, each adult would be charged £60 and the child £30. Still disproportionate?
No, that would actually seem sensible. However I got the impression that the amount quoted was just for the family and not their friends. However without knowing the origin (we can only assume Coventry) and destination (we can only assume Euston), the amount paid (this can vary considerably) and the exact amounts asked for per passenger, it is difficult to comment on the specifics of this case.
However the rules are, in my opinion, charging disproportionate amounts, e.g someone can buy a £23 Advance fare from Wakefield to Derby, get the wrong train and then be charged for a brand new anytime single (at £19) on top. Someone buying on board would only pay £19. Yes those figures are correct, I saw them last night and was quite surprised.
If these people were excessed, and the £270 is for the entire group, then it's more in line with what I would consider reasonable and I would, in those circumstances, expect the customers to lose any legal battle and have no sympathy for them.
We really shouldn't judge the people in this case as we do not know the details.
But I can, and will, judge the rules. And they stink!
