It happened around 0200 this morning when an engineers train hit a herd of about 6 deer
The exact location was about half mile south of Eridge towards Crowborough
They always hang around in the fields close to the line in that location. Think ive hit about 10 deer in total in about 15 years driving the uckfield line. Add to that 2 dogs, hundreds of pigeons and pheasants, a duck and her chicks and a couple of foxes.

Quality reportage! A stock image of a Union Pacific loco and a photoshopped deer. All supposedly in rural Sussex.

I don’t think this is poor journalism at all, local journalism must be an incredibly dull job listening to people moan all day. This is clearly an exercise in mental freedom for the artist concerned. A case of hind over matter, you might say.

Weve got at least two large herds of deer which live alongside the Kent & East Sussex Railway. Ive caught one of them on the line in a cutting before early morning and herded them a mile along the line with a tamper!

Loads of Fallow and Red deer on the Ashdown forest. They move around and you see plenty crossing one after the other on the A26 in large groups and dead roadside. Roadkill or scared ones are no good for eating as the Adrenalin taints the meat Unlike birds. Numbers have been increasing and they are being culled in Forest which moves them down to Eridge/Groombridge areas. I have seen up to 50/60 in large herds at certain times of the year on the Spa VR Yesterday it was quite hot so only saw one Fallow hind and calf During the day.
On last train 15 Red hinds had come out in Groombridge place fields as I drove 1317 back to TWW.

Quick question, how is 1317 doing these days...?

Trains hit deer all the time in the Highlands without problems - though appreciate its usually just a single animal.
Also on the Settle-Carlisle and Bentham lines....although one New Year's Eve a few years ago, I was driving a 156 on the last Morecambe back to Skipton and hit a deer which jumped out in front of me about half-a-mile before Clapham. The impact of the carcass rolling under the train knocked the main reservoir drain cock off on the leading vehicle causing total loss of air, so I had to get out and operate the main res isolating cock before I could continue.

Argus is a common newspaper name - it refers to a monster - Argus Panoptes - from Greek mythology which was "all-seeing" on account of its 100 eyes. Paper names often go for grandiose things like this - The Sun (shining a light on news), The Guardian (protecting news), Daily Mirror (reflecting news). Whether they're successful or not is up to you - the Argus appears to have had a bad day out.

All that said, deer aren't the cleverest... we shouldn't fawn over them.
You forgot the Dail Mail (junk mail)

Potters up and down without fuss or issue. Uses about 10/15 gallons a day ( c 50 miles) if you drive gently and Midweek punters generally come for the overall exprience countryside etc not smoke or noise. I have been known to stop to allow photographs of deer although the CIG with its PA is a better train for that.
