I was just wondering how much those of you with a Priv card save per year on leisure travel? Round estimates of course as it is hard to estimate something you don't pay for.

Being someone that used to have one for being a dependant (my father worked for the railway for 33 years before being made redundant), I worked out that the most I would have saved was about £2000.

I wish I still had one!

I would estimate up to £1000 for me. For interest probably another £500 odd if I added residential travel.

I have a priv that I almost never use. I have an Annual Travelcard on Oyster (with a Gold Card that I never use), my 16-25 Railcard is loaded onto that so I save on travel using that. I find that for journeys on Intercity TOCs that a 16-25 discounted ticket is often cheaper than priv discounted ones, so I often go for that as I don't really need the flexibility offered by SD/SO tickets.

Probably about £1,000 in savings on leisure travel per year between myself and my partner. (One 7-day Standard ALR is already over £300 saved)
Commuting to work on my own TOC also saves me the cost of a season- my partner's will be about £2,200 for an annual when it's next renewed. I do use about £100-200 a year on Oyster PAYG though, so the saving's not the full amount.

It's fair to say that's it's a nice bonus. £3k a year after tax is equivalent to an extra £4k on my salary. :)

Do they still give staff the "16 box" Priv, I know my Dad keeps his for life, but is it still the same thing that gets given out?

if i dont mess it up, ill probably be working for the railway for the next 40 years and i will never get boxes :( its only for BR staff pre 1997

the best ill get is the 75% off card

back to point, i save about £900 a year

Oh wow, right! That seems kind of unfair to all those that give most of their life to working on the railway not to be given free travel.

I knew I was lucky to have a 16 box Priv (Until I left education) but I feel even more so now knowing that fact!

I must save thousands over the course of a year as save my free boxes for longer trips of at least two days or even more as the 48hrs can be dated for the next day if travelling on overnight services. I also use peak trains into & out of London where walk on fares would probably make my eyes water. Shorter trips such as a recent Stratford Int'l to Sutton where i wouldnt dream of wasting a box cost £2.05 single has instantly saved me £6.35.

I don't use my Priv card that much, mostly because most journeys I need to make are covered by my staff pass, but also because if I am making a journey where I could make use of a Priv ticket, it often works out cheaper to buy an Advance online rather than a 75% discounted Anytime ticket.

Probably saved about £80-100 or so in the last year though where I have bought a Priv ticket.

Yeah, the fact we now get unlimited free travel from our employer TOC has saved me loads of priv fares, especially as mine serves London. Another huge saving is the friendly upgrades to 1st but we wont go there again as that caused a bit of a problem for some last time it was brought up .

Don't forget the 'flash the pass' / 'any chance of a lift' for free travel anywhere, anytime...

The usual turn a blind eye staff scheme mate or 'can you sell me a priv' which means sit down & shut up,

Thanks for your replies.

That's some pretty savvy usage there dk1. @ N Levers that's alot of money!

Another question: When my old man was station supervisor at Euston until 96 he was commuting from PBO to KGX, what would he have done going up and down when the guard came? Would the uniform have been enough for the guard or what would he have done?

I wonder how many staff who allow their colleagues to travel for nothing are the same ones who will throw the book at a passenger who is on the wrong train/didn't buy a ticket because there was a huge queue/etc.

If they are like that with pax, they are more than likely the same with staff too. Traveling pass on intercity tocs I can't believe some of the attitude they display towards other staff.

Never forget a "member of the revenue protection team" on a train i was pass on going way ott with some old boy on a retired pass claiming it was forged.

These types of threads have been debated to death before.

In my experience, and in my area, I have found this to be the case also. I have colleagues who would ask me to pay my fare if my pass wasn't on my persona. I wouldn't complain however. Tough titty.

To be honest it is very rare that a ticket inspector ever looks closer enough to check the date on the pass. Once they see you are staff its almost as if they are embarressed to check it too forcefully.
