Derby - Lichfield TV via Birmingham?

At this moment I’m travelling Edinburgh to Lichfield TV on an Anytime First, route on the ticket shown as ‘any permitted’. At Derby we have a connection time of nearly an hour, then Derby to Tamworth and Tamworth to LTV - all a bit of a shlep.

The train continues from Derby to Birmingham New Street - would our tickets be valid via New Street then catch a train via Sutton Coldfield to Lichfield?

The irony that in fact the Cross Country train will, after Derby, be travelling through Lichfield TV high level without stopping is not lost on me…

Route 'any permitted' tickets from Edinburgh to Lichfield Trent Valley are valid via the XC route through Derby to Birmingham (then via Sutton Coldfield) - the route is traceable on map combination YA+BY+WM. It's possible that some staff might not not be aware of this validity, however.

If you don't mind a slower journey, then yes you can do that.

The train you are on would normally travel via Tamworth and therefore you are entitled to travel on the routes that would be permitted if the train took it's normal route.

Yep, fully understood and agreed. However, even though we’re only now approaching York, I know that the train due to go from Tamworth to Lichfield at 1813 is already cancelled, so the obvious itinerary of changing at Derby and Tamworth is moot. As you say the trip via Birmingham will take a while, so at the moment I’m tempted to cut our losses and jump off this Plymouth service at Burton and just get a taxi from there.

Yes, as the train is cancelled from Tamworth, you would be quicker to stay on and take the 1806 from Birmingham, arriving 1847 (28 minutes late, just short of the Delay Repay threshold, assuming it arrives on time)

Yes you could do that; the taxi would be at your own expense, though.

It may be worth it to save around 70 minutes of your time but that's your choice to make!
