Intercity 47 at Bristol TM

Hi all,

So I'm at Bristol TM right now and there's what appears to be an Intercity livery 47 at the end of one of the platforms. Do my eyes deceive me? Any idea what this is doing here?

Indeed it is. 828 was replaced at Bristol with 37521 and 34046 'Braunton':

No idea, I'm afriad. But there was a 1Z65 this morning at Bristol that changed locos, running Steam forward to Shrewsbury (although it seems to have had some trouble with a late departure from Bristol), and the loco is now in the TD Berth as 0Z66, indicating it will work 1Z66 later today.

Thank you all for your information, very interesting. Quite surprised such a loco even exists in that paint job, thought I was in some kind of time warp. I didn't get the number i'm afraid, only saw it at a distance.

It is a repaint. It has been painted in a number of other colours since it lost Intercity livery while with Virgin Trains in April 2001.

In late April 2001, 47828 attended the SVR diesel weekend ex-works in Virgin red, with red buffer beams, silver buffers and white wheel rims. The event, attended by Virgin’s Chris Green and a raft of railway press luminaries, saw the loco named Severn Valley Railway, and was also used to invigorate enthusiasm in the 47/8s.

Up until that point, Virgin’s ‘Eights had largely been blind-eyed by loco fans. But placing a pristine example at the top of the Saturday billing, double-heading it with ‘Hoover 35’, then announcing a programme of celebrity repaints and namings, got the 47/8s plenty of magazine coverage. The coverage, which also stressed how little time the ILRA locos now had left in frontline service, undoubtedly heightened interest in the fleet.

LSL have painted their stock into a range of colours, with some Class 90s, Mk3s and a DVT in Intercity as well as the 47.

There are five preserved mainline registered 47s:

270 in BR Blue
580 in BR Blue with Union Jack and "Stratford" Grey roof
712 in ScotRail Express
773 in two-tone Green
828 in InterCity "Swallow"

There are then a further thirty 47s in service with the likes of West Coast Railways, Locomotive Services Limited found in a number of liveries.

Close, but not entirely correct - the 47 was already painted into Intercity Swallow at Ruddington by it's owners, D05 Preservation Ltd, long before it's hire period initially to West Coast before LSL.

Fair enough, I'll take the pedantry! In my defence I was only involved with the times they were running in, not what colours they were painted.

No problem. It is a little surprising though that, 828 has been on hire to LSL for coming up to 2 years, yet it hasn't seemingly be paired with the IC rake of Mk3s yet.

Being totally pedantic for a moment, LSL does have a IC Swallow 47 in it's own fleet, however 841 is a parts donor only and isnt likely to return to the mainline.

(plus it was always a big of a dog that one anyway!)
