Hey guys,

Currently have an advance single from Horsham to Nottingham and my Thameslink train is delayed by 10 minutes. My ticket is valid on the 15:35 EMR from St Pancras, but due to the 10 minute Thameslink delay, there is a possibility I won't make it for the EMR service. If I miss this service and I get the next one, will I risk a penalty fare?

You are entitled to use the next EMR service and there is no need to get permission to do this. There is also no basis for issuing a penalty fare. If you arrive at your final destination 15 or more minutes late you are entitled to claim delay repay.

Thanks for the reply. This is indeed correct as I checked the National Rail Conditions of Carriage, and what you say is exactly in line with what condition 9.4 says.

You can board the next EMR train without having to ask permission (you may need to explain at the gate line but they have no basis to deny you entry).

I would take a screengrab of the National Rail app or Real Time Trains with the actual time of arrival at St Pancras, just so you have some evidence your first train was delayed

The minimum connection time at St Pancras is 15 minutes, so if your incoming train arrives in less than this time, you are covered. Of course, in reality, something like 5 minutes should be enough to connect if you are relatively mobile. Good luck.

Edit: you're currently expected to arrive at 15.22 (+7 delay) so although under MCT you should be fine.

As @gray1404 has mentioned, you'd also be entitled to claim Delay Repay (from Thameslink / GTR) if you miss your connection. Should be something like 50% of the cost of your advance single ticket price back assuming you're 30->59 minutes late arriving in Nottingham.

Thanks for the advice!
An update, there is some good news, we are running fast from Gatwick Airport to East Croydon via the Quarry Line, which means I should make it for my booked EMR service

Looks like the OP's train from Horsham was back "on time" by the time it called at St. Pancras International and so the OP should almost certainly have made the 1535 to Nottingham (which ironically also departed late).

Indeed it was, and I thankfully made it for the 15:35, and managed to safely get to Nottingham no problem!
