Some weird things going on there. An Anytime Single is 'only' £32.20 so how can any other single cost more?

4 years ago the fares were £37.10 for a return and £27.40 for a single, both valid at any time.
Before the January rises the fares were £40.70 for a return and £30.40 for a single.
The fares now are £43.10 SOR and £32.20 for a single.

So, while not cheap, it's not suffered at the hands of so-called "simplification" or done too badly from the recent unfare rises.

Many others are less fortunate, the equivalent return fare from York to Peterborough going up from £47 to a ludicrous £63.20.

On other routes such as Ashford to London Charing Cross, they have not only suffered a reduction in service and slower trains but also ludicrous fare rises from £18.60 CDR/£33.40 SDR up to £22.30 CDR/£41.30 SDR, around a 25% fare increase for a lower standard of service. Would this happen in mainland Europe? I think not.

So the fare actually isn't bad!

As for the joke fare of £999,998, a very odd bug in the system!

I think that screenshot's part of pricing a return journey; the "as singles from £56.70" means you would pay at least that to have your outbound and inbound journeys on separate tickets.

It may well be that the cheaper advance fares have all sold out and the combination of two of the most expensive advance singles is more expensive than a turn up and go return.

The Route Any Permitted day return from Cheadle Hulme to Manchester has gone up from £3-30 to £3-60. It was never valid via Manchester only via Wilmslow. (As Manchester Airport was/is a member a Wilmslow Group and Cheadle Hulme had/has Wilmslow as one of its routeing points it was/is the only valid route)
