I saw a Facebook post this evening regarding Stephensons of Essex service 14 which terminates on Foulness Island within an MoD restricted area. Checks have to be made by security guards to ensure that the passengers have the relevant permits before the bus is allowed onto the island.

Got me wondering if there are any other examples elsewhere in the UK where a scheduled bus service enters a restricted zone where the general public aren’t allowed?

It no longer exists, but for many years Wilts & Dorset (later Damory) operated the 184 route between Weymouth and Salisbury which did a loop through Blandford Camp. I believe at the checkpoint, a guard entered the bus and nobody was allowed to leave unless they had an ID permit permitting access to the camp.

There was a thread on this two years ago, and funnily enough, the 14 was the first service mentioned then, as well!

Sorry folks, should have done a search to see if this had already been covered before starting a new thread.

The number 10 Corsham town service, doesn’t enter the MOD property but does a double run to the roundabout outside the Basil Hill site at Westwells

There is a huge MOD cyber security centre there, built over the former underground quarries, WW2 underground ordnance store and Cold War bunkers. Now used for secure computers and data centres.
