Southern Class 313 withdrawal/storage/scrapping updates

Has something happened to 313217? I heard about a hay stack the other day was involved. Now 377/3 seems to be a regular on the seafords.

I last saw it laying over in Montpelier sidings (Brighton) on 2nd July. It appeared to have had a spruce up as the front ends looked rather clean...

One out of 3 Seaford diagrams has been a 377/3 these past two days. 377314 today, 377305 yesterday.

Not as if there is a shortage of spare 313s, usually 6-7 units unallocated daily

There are usually just four 313s out on Sundays: three on the Seaford route and one does Littlehampton - Bognor workings.

I suspect for such short journeys, Southern thought 313's would be fine. A bit different maybe on the Pompy locals from Littlehampton but few people I'd imagine travel this journey end-to-end

Chichester being the county town is probably the biggest attraction for Littlehampton and Bognor (via Barnham) but a lot of people do travel on to the Pompey area for stuff like Football, the hospitals employment and education. From Littlehampton it's definitely a more important flow than Brighton for instance. Once you go east of Angmering everything heads to Worthing and on to Brighton.

Chose to get the bus from Seaford to Brighton today for my onward connection to London. 313s are unbearable in 30°C, even with hoppers open at speed in the fast sections around Lewes Station. As such, had absolutely no intention of travelling in one at 40°C.

The new Coaster buses held up pretty well (for a bus). The older buses are absolutely ****ing unbearable on a normal summers day, let alone 40°C. Apparently there was quite a few breakdowns where old knackered cooling systems just gave up the ghost at the slightest incline. As such, I'm amazed the 313s held up in service.

Ah that probably explains why a few units have had a bit of a minor spruce-up then.

Of all the units I've seen in the last few weeks, 313.206 really lets the side down and should be scrapped now. Every other unit is in reasonably respectable condition

313206 is a nice rider though with a fine turn of speed, so ideally they tidy it up.

Naturally, I hope the 313s do stay a bit longer. October 2023 would take them over 47 years of service, a remarkably long career which I doubt will be bettered by any other second-generation EMUs.

I have my own source which told me couple days ago that the Class 313s were staying beyond this year. Stating that guard training was still being done on them.
However they didn’t say how long the 313s would be staying for so to know at least October 2023 is interesting.

I've been told by multiple people that this is false since there has been no word about what's been said here. With what's currently going on with the 701s and the impact it's happening with the south of London operators, sure it would make sense to keep them on. But with the DFT and regular passengers, I'm very certain they want them gone like what happened with the southern 455s. So In this case, reduced capacity.

455s only went because the license / lease hire, ran out. The cost to renew the license / lease hire went up by quite alot, so Southern decided to not renew it.
The 313's license / lease actually runs out at the end off 2023.
