I know that this has probably been discussed extensively but does anyone know the whereabouts of 158763 and 159102? I know that 158763 has been written off. Does anyone know the status of 159102?
Both units remain with the RAIB, I believe at Long Marston.
They are indeed; all 5 coaches were under wraps at Rail Live. Both units remain with the RAIB, I believe at Long Marston.
All five vehicles have been written off.Yup, both still at Long Marston, the only vehicle out of the 5 expected to have a long term future is the rear DMCL vehicle of 159102 the other vehicles will be disposed of in due course.
How exceptionally odd, as I was literally going to create a thread to ask the same just last night!I know that this has probably been discussed extensively but does anyone know the whereabouts of 158763 and 159102? I know that 158763 has been written off. Does anyone know the status of 159102?

At this stage of the fleet’s life, a single vehicle with no others to put it in a set with is probably worth more to the owner as a spares donor for engine, bogies etc. Thanks for the update, I know there was some hope at one time to possibly do something with the DCML as per that Scottish CL 156. Presumably been decided it’s not worth it!
Angel did write the unit off. I wasn't aware that First had purchased it before selling it on to Brodies.156478 was actually purchased by FirstGroup and then quickly sold on to Brodies.
I'm so pleased to see that you're finally taking a productive approach to thisIs there any publication to confirm this that I can use to amend the unsurprisingly wrong Wikipedia pages that show both in service?

Though in the case of a single driving car, there's not much you can do with it other than creating a hybrid 3-car set. Outside of another incident happening which damages a different 158/159 vehicle beyond repair, there probably won't be a need for it.Written off won’t necessarily mean no return to service, it just means it’s been ‘written off’ as an asset by the owner. 156478 was written off by Angel Trains, but instead of going for scrap it was purchased by Brodies, repaired and refurbished, and returned to service. Indeed 43030 and some vehicles from 390033 did see further use after being written off too, albeit not in passenger service.
Thanks![]()

Bit off topic here but was 43030 actually damaged?Written off won’t necessarily mean no return to service, it just means it’s been ‘written off’ as an asset by the owner. 156478 was written off by Angel Trains, but instead of going for scrap it was purchased by Brodies, repaired and refurbished, and returned to service. I’m sure that wasn’t intentionally patronising, so thank youI'm so pleased to see that you're finally taking a productive approach to this![]()
Well - given the flexibility of the 15x designs in being able to form hybrid sets, if the damage isn't too great then the ability to strengthen a 2-car set to a 3-car might actually be quite useful. For example, another 3-car 158 in the GWR fleet would always find useful employment, or perhaps the ability to augment one of Northern's 400hp sets to 3-car to see off one of the prototype 'Sprinters'.Though in the case of a single driving car, there's not much you can do with it other than creating a hybrid 3-car set. Agreed - there are enough two car 158s to make further use of the remaining coach worthwhile.I'd personally be quite surprised not to see the relatively undamaged vehicle back in traffic given the general pressure on the UK diesel fleet and DfT keenness to get rid of older, more expensive types such as short formed HSTs and 150s.
The 159/1s (where the vehicle in question comes from) are 350hp units, not 400.Well - given the flexibility of the 15x designs in being able to form hybrid sets, if the damage isn't too great then the ability to strengthen a 2-car set to a 3-car might actually be quite useful. Does that mean it will be sent off for scrap?I know that 158763 has been written off.
After stripping for parts, yes.Does that mean it will be sent off for scrap?
Not necessarily, but highly likely. 156478 was written off in 2014 but was repaired in the end.Does that mean it will be sent off for scrap?
Flood damage is likely easier to repair. The 158 has some major structural damage. Not necessarily, but highly likely. 156478 was written off in 2014 but was repaired in the end.
I’m just still surprised the spare body shell at Long Marston hasn’t been rebuilt yet, surely the remains of the written off vehicles would provide enough parts to “build” a new vehicle, than rebuild a potentially structurally damaged vehicle. Not necessarily, but highly likely. 156478 was written off in 2014 but was repaired in the end.
Is it damaged on both ends?Flood damage is likely easier to repair. The 158 has some major structural damage.
