Snowdon Sherpa rebranded into Welsh

The ’Snowdon Sherpa’ buses aimed at getting tourists out of their cars in order to reach scenic areas of Snowdonia have now been rebranded with a Welsh name - ’Sherpa’r Wyddfa'. Being as most tourists are English speakers, this does seem to be a rather dumb idea.

Previously known as Snowdon Sherpa, Transport for Wales’ newly branded Sherpa’r Wyddfa bus service will provide more frequent services to people travelling throughout Snowdonia National Park.

Seems a good idea to me. Wales is bilingual, in Gwynedd Welsh is first.

The Welsh Government's other bus service brands; TrawsCymru , TrawsHafren and Fflecsi are also Welsh so I'm not surprised. Remember they're heavily influenced by Plaid Cymru, who they're not-quite-in-coalition with in the Welsh Parliament.

Making use of the different sentence structures of English and Welsh it did used to be called "Snowdon Sherpa'r Wyddfa", a common form in Welsh. I do think not including the word "Snowdon" will reduce the effectiveness of the promotion.

Traws sounds like Trans and Fflecsi sounds like Flexi, so those don't need translating.

Doesn’t matter what language you use for the Sherpa network, there is still no coordination with the rail network in either timings, connections or through ticketing…

Apart from the largely secretive North Wales Rover ticket which is not advertised, consequently potential passengers and many customer facing public transport staff have no idea of its validity or even its existence!

The difference between Welsh and Cornish nationalism, and the Welsh and Cornish language, is huge. The Cornish variety is the domain of various exhibitionists, misfits and (mercifully very few) devious extremists with a grudge. If you knew my surname and family background you'd realise I'm not anti Wales or even anti the Welsh language, just don't want it imposed unnecessarily on superfluous things.

A debate about First's branding here in Cornwall is the last thing that's needed, though I'd wish that message could get through to their local management who've gone totally overboard in that direction imo, a shame when they've done so much good for bus passengers in recent times.

From a Welsh perspective 'someone who lives in an eastern country' could be interpreted as someone resident in England and by extension the Sherpa’r Wyddfa service as ' the bus to Snowdon for English people'

Most of it (Wales), population-wise, doesn't speak the 'native' language except as an academic subject.Like in Cornwall, it is cranks who are trying to impose a bogus view of history on the basis of trying to exclude others 'not from round here'. Much nationalism without great public support has its roots in fascism. Scottish nationalism certainly did, though it's gone a long way since then in the right direction imo.

Most people who live within the Snowdonia National Park boundary speak Welsh.

If someone's offended by seeing or hearing Welsh, perhaps they shouldn't come to Wales. Fortunately people who are offended are in a minority, and they won't be missed.
