Avanti have put out a message for passengers to expect disruption over the next few days, due to a shortage of train crew this weekend, as well as extreme temperatures next week. Amended timetables and alterations are expected.

Amazing how Avanti cannot make the effort to get crews to Carlisle to save 90 minutes on a rail replacement bus.
They don't have a depot in Carlisle anymore - it was closed around 20 years ago. And they certainly don't have any stabling facilities there.

So if a Glasgow turn is uncovered they're very unlikely to have any alternative other than cancelling the train north of Preston.

Very slightly OT: Do they have crew changes at Carlisle? I thought they did. .. or it could just be me thinking that. We all know Preston is one.

No, just Preston (and Crewe/Wolverhampton on some services).

The weekend has started early again.....20+ cancellations today plus many trains terminating/startiing short. Both 1907 & 2007 Euston to Liverpool cancelled.

Indeed, I think that happened under BRs Inter City sector, apart from some catering crew who are still based there & a few sidings by the station that have long been used to stable 390/221 stock during disruption or engineering work.

2 trains in a row to Liverpool have been cancelled which are the 19.07 & 20.07, good luck trying to find a seat on the 21.07 which will be rammed as it's the last one of the day.

The alternative train to Crewe (and change for Liverpool) after the 1907 was the 1910 Holyhead which was a 5 car Voyager ! The 1930 to Glasgow made an extra stop at Crewe as the next alternative but the 1940 to Manchester wasn't an option as it was also cancelled. Which ever you got it was likely to be rammed & a miserable journey.
What makes it really infuriating is that both the 1907 & 2007 did actually run as 5F26 & 5F27 (empty stock)

So no guard/train manager then.

Not a good start today on Avanti's longest routes; Cancelled so far:

1S36 0615 Birmingham New St-Edinburgh terminated Preston
9M52 0853 Edinburgh-Euston starts Preston
1M06 0530 Glasgow C-Euston started Preston
1M08 0737 Glasgow C-Euston cancelled

(Two of the first four Glasgow-London trains cancelled)

...And yet plenty of ECS moves between both Glasgow and Edinburgh, and Preston, in both directions! Disappointing that two of the morning cancellations were Lancaster starters, so presumably not even enough crew to cover the short trip north of Preston. Sorry for the rant but I really do think Lancaster gets a raw deal from Avanti's staffing policy, based as it is around Preston!

I'm assuming those crews that are available wont come off roster or change to help out hence why it can be consecutive services on a particular route.

To be fair, there are still a number of Northern and TPE services calling at Lancaster when Avanti has thrown in the towel.

It’s also due to the fact of the contract of each depot Euston, Wolverhampton, and Manchester drivers aren’t allowed anywhere north of Preston station meaning if they’ve got the train crew to run it south of Preston but not the north the train has to be terminated there

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand; unless by "contract" you mean drivers' route knowledge. I get that drivers with route knowledge south of Preston wouldn't be able to drive north of Preston. Or is this a contractual issue in terms of employment?

Anyway the large number of ECS moves today illustrate that Avanti do have drivers to cover north of Preston; so I guess the issue today is Conductors?

3 of the cancellations from Manchester to Euston this morning all ran as ECS so there does seem to be more of a shortage of TM's/ conductors than drivers

Sounds like just route knowledge. I wouldn't imagine Glasgow & Preston depots would not permit it in the same way Glasgow drivers wouldn't sign that far South.

Perhaps they mean agreements between unions & management regarding what depots cover which routes & procedures for proposed changes.

I noticed the last Manchester - London train got replaced by a bus this evening.

I would imagine passengers who were at Manchester Piccadilly for the 20:35 wanting Macclesfield/Stoke would have either caught the 20;27 XC service or maybe even the stopper to avoid the bus. I dread to think what time the bus would get into Watford & London itself.

46 Avanti canncellations today.......this might be a record, plus numerous trains terminating/starting short.

1B08 (1005 WVH-EUS) and 9G04 (0951 EUS-WVH) have both run ECS throughout, which seems spectacularly pointless but is presumably to get two drivers to the opposite ends of the circuit. In which case why not leave the units where they are and get the drivers to travel pass?

Good question. Seems like a shocking waste of electricity in a climate emergency and, for Avanti, no doubt a significant track access charge that could better be spent on doing something useful for the customers - or am I mis-understanding something here?

The drivers would be in the wrong place for their next working so would have to run. Track access is already paid for so only a bit of juice used.

Milage, the need to keep the units on a certain diagram for maintenance requirements and so on...

At what point are Avanti expected to run a full "normal" service (eg 3tph Man/London) with a very small number of cancellations? September? December? May '23?

HS2 will open first at this rate. It's set to be an indefinite issue at weekends.
