London to Exeter 23rd April, which service.

Hi all,

Need a bit of advice on GWR and South West trains to Exeter from London on Sat 23rd April.

Got some great tickets from Manchester to Euston on VT, £29 for 2 + 5 kids.

Next is the bit across to Exeter, have a choice of Waterloo South West (longer and cheaper) or Paddington (Quick and Expensive)

Is the Super Off Peak single the cheapest ticket they offer or can you get them cheaper. I have a cost on the net of £103 compared to £54 for South West. The £103 does seem expensive or am I paying for the convenience of a quicker service.

For info using a Family Railcard with 2 Adults and 5 kids.

Do you know what time you will be travelling from London? Might be worthwhile looking on FGW's website for advance singles?

Hi We get into Euston for 09:06 was looking at the 10:06 out of paddington.

Actually I have just had a quick look on FGW's website and Advance Singles are not available for that date yet. However looking at the previous Saturday tickets are available for about £40 to £50. Likelihood is that the advance tickets haven't been released for that date yet. So if you check back in a couple of days I would think they should be available. Although I can't guarantee they will be in this price range of course but should be better than paying £103.

FGW website says that (for the previous Saturday) they are £50.25 for the 10:06 out of Paddington. Would have thought they would be the same or similar price for the next Saturday. Check back on there in a couple of days and the tickets should be available hopefully.

At the moment you can get the 10:20 from Waterloo arr Exeter 13:42 for £54.20 in total (11:20 dep £69.70) SWT have released tickets up until the 23rd.

The SWT 158's have the most comfortable seat IMO but it is a slower route and cheaper generally than FGW from Paddington.

Why deffo get the 1006? Do they do free beer :lol:


Getting stung by XC on advance refunds on my original journey, amazing they will let me choose a different date and a different time, so in effect travelling on a completely different train to the one booked, so why I can't I change my destination station... baffles me beyond belief,

I believe that's something in the NRCoC. But I could stand to be corrected.

In first class yes! and more legroom, much faster (only call reading) buffet catering, if nt better! the 1006 is a good one! and better staff

That might be pushing it if your VT is late, and there are engineering works on the Tube, especially with 5 children in tow. :o

Have you considered the Megatrain website? Bookings open 45 days before dae of travel. W'loo - Exeter is one of the routes.

First Class calls only at Reading ? Standard also calls at Newbury, Pewsey, Westbury........... ? :lol::lol:

The cheapest FGW tickets are cheaper than the cheapest SWT tickets so it is definitely worth waiting until FGW release tickets. Cheapest price is £31 on FGW compared to £33.50 on SWT. The cheapest tickets are usually available as well, just check everyday waiting for advance tickets to be released. It may well be cheaper to travel on the 1106 train as well as it is a much quieter service as it only goes to Plymouth rather than Penzance. On the 16th the 1106 would cost £31 while the 1006 costs £41.30

Looks like it will have to be the 1006 as the 1106 does not appear on the schedule.

I take it I can book reservations on the FGW, with the usual options of table, power points etc.

You'd be better to wait for a couple of days before booking yet as the price will drop significantly. I just looked and although there is no 1106 there is a 1030 which may be cheaper. The best idea is to wait until advance tickets are released and look at a variety of trains to see which one will be cheapest. Yes, you can request table seats. All seats have power points so no need to request that.

The 1006 is better when travelling to Exeter as it has a (booked) time of 2h03 to complete the journey, compared to the marginally slower 0906. In theory it can be done in sub 2 hours.

1006 also has a Travelling Chef of some description on last check.

So it does, must be a new addition since December, used to be just the 1006 and 1106 that had Chefs on Saturday I think.

Used to be the 1106 and 1206, with the chefs having come up on the 0655 and 0747 off Plymouth. Two now go down from London on the 0906 and 1006 as well, returning on afternoon trains from Plymouth.
