About 10 years ago I bought and used a Bache to Chester Zoo ticket to save a few quid. I don't think I got it as an add on ticket like a PlusBus. I don't remember if it was a tip from this forum or not. Was there a lot of tourist attractions that were available as destinations? Are there any left now?

Not sure if I quite understand the question correctly, but as for the latter point, National Rail gives the option of "Alton Towers (ATW)" as a destination - although I don't know whether this refers to the theme park or the old station which closed over 60 years ago, particularly as searching for a journey there yields no results!

I mean a ticket which grants you admission to the tourist attraction. The ticket I bought granted me admission to Chester Zoo. I even think there was a dedicated bus link from Chester station.

Ah, thanks for clarifying. :)

I assumed you meant a ticket which included, say, a bus transfer to said tourist attraction, but not necessarily admission.

This was a Merseyrail ticket - I have done it myself for South Parkway if I remember correctly the price was not much more than normal admission and yes there was a bus from the station to the zoo.

The Chester Zoo rail add-on ticket (in first half 2008) was a combined rail/bus/admission ticket. Was an extra £11.20 for adults (£8.15 children) on top of whatever the rail fare was to/from Bache.

Not to say that you wouldn't have been allowed to travel on the bus without such a through rail/bus/admission ticket, but guess you'd have to first pay on the bus and probably again at the zoo entrance to get into the zoo.

Buses ran every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on Sundays/Bank Holidays. Journey time was around 10 minutes.

Noted that others have reported that the bus/train interchange for Chester Zoo was, at some other time, Chester rather than Bache.

I would’ve fascinated to know the economics of the system in some (all) German “Verkehrsverbuende” where for major events etc your event ticket automatically includes local public transport for a period before and after the event. No doubt would get dismissed here as being unfair on those who choose not to use public transport (or can walk!)

Fairly sure that this is (or certainly was) the case for home football matches played by Brighton and Hove Albion FC.

I used the Chester Zoo ticket a few years ago. However, it no longer exists.
Most of these sort of tickets are now finished (including the Alton Towers one) instead the 2for1 days out replaced them. Whilst Alton Towers is part of that, Chester Zoo isn't. You, of course, have to make, and pay, your own way between station and attraction.

Currently there is 2 for 1 entry to Cadw properties if you present a rail ticket for that day.
You get discount at CAT near Machynlleth if you provide a train or bus ticket.

There is (was?) substantial Federal or Land funding for such events (the one I am familar with is the Protestant Kirchentag which is massive!) - I suppose on the basis that the local economy benefits, with increase tax take etc.
How precisely it works maybe one of our German members could explain?
