Last train York to London

23rd July, last train York to London Kings Cross showing 20.01. I've looked at a via Leeds option but doesn't offer anything later. Anyone know a permitted route that would allow a later departure even if slower? 20.01 is tight but doable for me I think.

Think the 20:01 is effectively the last train for London from York. There's a 20:15 (to Kings Cross) from Leeds via Doncaster, but you wouldn't make it. Nor if you tried to make connections from York for London St. Pancras (via Derby) or London Euston (via Birmingham New Street).

There's an overnight national express coach from Leeds to Victoria departs at 00.20 if you need a backup.

Not that I'm aware of, I've had similar issues getting back from Newcastle on Saturday evenings.

My plan B then is a taxi from my event which is due to end about 19.30 to the York station to save some time

LNER are generally reliable so it should be alright.

The last train is very early on Saturdays.

There is no later option; if there was, ticket booking sites would find it (sites that offer split tickets are required in some cases where the last journey opportunity is not a permitted route on one ticket).

Last trains on a Saturday are almost always significantly earlier than on other days of the week. This is because it is the night where line closures for maintenance and engineering works are longest.

This is further compounded by the fact that on mainlines to/from London, there are usually more crew based, and units stabled, at the 'country' end than the 'London' end. Therefore the first train from London tends to be later, and the last train to London tends to be earlier.

Additionally compounded by the fact that density of traffic means that the need for engineering possessions will be a touch higher at the London end.
