There are a whole load of alterations to services on the Rhymney Valley line tomorrow (actually it's today by the time I post this) and the reason given is "due to forecasted hot weather". What's that all about? And why is it only affecting services on the Rhymney Valley line? Does it have it's own micro-climate?!!

With it only being the Rhymney line, are they expecting a surge of Cl 769 issues in the heat tommorow perhaps?

769s don’t like the warm weather, saying that 769s don’t like coming off shed!

There was a rumour one went into Caerphilly tunnel and refused to come out as it was raining ! Shame they didn’t do a fat controller and brick of up save us all a load of hassle.

Also alterations due to high temperatures at Dore, seems very localised

There's usually six Welsh ones out every day. But yes it seems a bit much given that the Pacers plodded along quite happily in the heat. Sometimes the engines would revert to idle but a visit from a fitter at Cardiff Central to top up the coolant or adjust the fan usually sorted that out.

You'd have thought part of the design phase for the 769s would have been consideration for cooling in hot weather!

Quality of track work perhaps?

The Rhymney valley has benefited from significant investment over the last 6-12 months.

769s aren’t very good in hot weather, the stop / start nature combined with the gradients isn’t a good combination. I assume they’ve moved 150s from elsewhere to cover or taken out X number of 769 diagrams to ensure a reliable service of what’s left.

Not ideal, but overall it benefits the passengers with hopefully avoiding service disruption when a 769 goes pop.

Fair enough. The first spell of mild weather we had we had heat related speed restrictions because of the poor state of the track. Imagine being stopped at nearly midnight to be advised of the heat related speed restriction!

I’d rather have a speed restriction as we don’t ignore the issue, than have trains hit buckled rails at line speed.

Much like wind related restrictions, much better to hit a tree at 50, than 90.
