Looks like a really messy rush hour on the cards getting out of London. Track circuit failures have crippled the Uckfield and East Grinstead lines.

Also reports of smoke at Gatwick Airport causing disruption.

Looks like from RTT that 1L29 sat at Sanderstead for exactly 4 hours, 12:46 till 16:46

According to the Southern Website there is a problem at Greenhurst Junction. Can anyone enlighten me as to where that is, please?

I wonder if they mean Hurst Green junction just south of Hurst Green Station where the two branches split

Greenhurst junction is between Crowborough and Uckfield - it's the start/end of the single line section to Uckfield.

It's quite a way from S Croydon, but obviously hasn't helped things in general...

That's not quite how I read it - would be interested in technical reasons, but it reads like expansion causing failure of a track circuit, rather than a full buckle.

Not how I read it either they explained in great detail about it being heat related and causing expansion which is causing problems to track circuits. No mention of a buckled rail.

And Brighton to Lewes has been fubar‘d this evening with a rogue hay bale on the track at Falmer.

I‘ve never heard that reason causing delays on the tracks!

It's happened at least twice in my experience, in Scotland; The cause was the (quite large) circular hay bales used nowadays being left on a hillside, and somehow rolling down onto the line below. On one occasion a train actually struck the bale, fortunately without serious consequences, other than blocking the line for a while.

It’s not at all consistent, browsing the online Kent/Sussex/Wessex sectional appendix there’s no obvious pattern, some 2>1 or 1>2 transitions are named but many aren’t.

Got caught up in the shenanigans at Eastbourne (EBN) this morning with the signal failure outside the station wiping out Platforms 1 and 3.

Utter chaos there with loads of students scrambling onto the trains that did run.

I bailed out and jumped on a 12X to Seaford.

Particularly with the service pattern as is, any incidents at EBN is crippling the frequency.

You've also got Ashurst Junction (which historically was a traditional junction) and Blackham Junction. And Hever Junction.
