I have been told by someone from the inside. That Southern are still going to be carrying out Assessments and interviews from the last lot of applications, but the training school will not be having any new trainee drivers for the next 18 - 24 months. All Assessments and interviews is held on file for five years, when the training school re-opens then anyone who has passed everything on file, will be called forward.

That’s why I asked if you were Sn. No courses this year and rumours of nothing in 2023! Due to passenger numbers still not increasing and some local services not resuming as planned. I’m guessing they’ll factor in natural wastage then start recruiting if and when
This is incredibly sad. Especially considering the latest press releases have stated rail passenger numbers are now 92% of pre pandemic levels and still increasing.

The thing is. It would be nice to get an honest update. Rather than stringing us along each month. And still no update for June.
Not sure what happened to the June update. Maybe they are considering what to say.

I hear there's plenty of training at the training school going to be happening on the GN side. Not sure where all the trainees will end up afterwards seeing as there aren't many inner DIs

I could get to Kings cross. Wonder if I could be considered. Might email Trudy.
Don’t give up…. They could run a course next week if the September diagrams are increased or if there are a few unexpected retirements or if there are those looking for part time. The examples are endless. Don’t get angry with the updates, they are truthful to the degree that things can change suddenly and a course could happen for any reason. The one thing you don’t want to do is alienate yourselves by pressing the wrong buttons of those in HR because there are plenty in front and behind you that will be waiting patiently for an opportunity.This is incredibly sad. Certainly not angry with the updates, just hopeful they may give a slightly fuller explanation as to the current situation. I’ve been holding off booking a holiday on their advice, so it would be nice to be able to get away for a couple of weeks if I could.
Trainees usually end up at Hornsey or Welwyn GC. Kings Cross is a tiny depot and only accepts internal moves in, AFAIK.

Sorry its not good news for SN wannabes, but thought it might be useful for those who'd consider a GN Depot.
Although the chances are it would be Hornsey (or possibly Welwyn).
I know in the past people who applied to a SN vacancy and were given places on GN.

This is what I got on 14/6.. “I would like to provide you with an update regarding a Trainee Driver Course start date. A July and August course has been identified for Cricklewood, Hornsey and Welwyn Driver Depots the spaces on this course have now been allocated, pending medical review. A TL South course as in Brighton/Three Bridges have been planned in for later on this year, please note this is not definite and is subject to confirmation at a laterResourcing Meeting. Thanks, as always, for your patience and I'll be in touch with another update in July.” |

Good morning, has anyone had any updates recently?
I last had an email update in April, saying they expected to hear about June assessments at the end of May, and I would received an email end of May.
I’ve been waiting for assessment days for Southern and TL since Feb 2021, anyone else in the same position?

Same as me, I emailed last month as hadn’t heard, she said that they had people awaiting medicals for Cricklewood & Hornset and that they hoped for an update later in the year for Brighton but I would still receive an update in July… Haven’t had one yet though…
Be patient…….from what I’ve heard, and the railway is full of whispers!, it’s unlikely there will be any training before the takeover of GoAhead in October. However, they are very short of drivers throughout the brands so a flurry of courses could occur towards the end of the year. Numbers are increasing, especially off peak travel, and there’s a demand to reinstate some of the gaps in the timetable to cope with this!
