Anyone else noticed how bad the PAs are on these? On the Portsmouth - Cardiff trains, the guard's announcements are usually so quiet and muffled that it's inaudible. Not usually an issue but today when we were held outside the Severn Tunnel for an hour, we had to resort to Twitter for updates (the guard was very helpful after we let them know couldn't hear them). Oddly, when the driver did an announcement, it was loud and clear.

GW 158 PAs are also really bad, most I’ve been on recently you can similarly hardly hear.

There are still a few in the First blue with pink doors livery

Saw one in old colours at Bradford-on-Avon yesterday, and another coupled to a 2car unit in GWR green, but strangely the green paintwork (which is presumably newer) was more dull.

That makes it sound like a fault with the handset / mic the guard was using. Had it on the old Northern where the guard made an announcement from one part of the train and sounded underwater, when they made one from another part you could hear them loud and clear.

Nothing worse than annoying loud PA announcements the whole journey. It’s very rear to get any peace and quiet. I can’t stand the ones on SWR 158’s which crash through extremely loud and feels like your being attacked!

Really? On 159s you can barely hear the guards announcements. I assume you mean the auto tannoy.

159’s are mostly quiet with a few not. It’s the 158 fleet which do the Romsey rounders which are awfully loud.

The auto announcements are often ear piercing whilst the air conditioning in the old first class leaves you with a headache !
I do feel installing mini tables on the 165s was an opportunity missed

An easy win on 166s is of course reinstating the three missing tables in the middle coach

Is there a reason why the Wolverton-Bristol working goes via Wembley and Acton (WCML to London the GWML), but the Bristol-Wolverton working is routed from Swindon via Oxford, Leamington Spa, Water Orton and Nuneaton to WCML.

Just intrigued by the different routing
It is a Sunday so, engineering work would be a guess!

Two unrefurbished two car 165s on a Bristol can't be many left now ?

Ridiculous not having a single table anywhere whilst luxurious 158s run the Romsey shuttles

Those pictures aren’t representative of all the GWR sets, just a few worse-case examples. The West units I regularly ride are clean and tidy inside, if a bit threadbare in places. Perhaps the Reading sets are in a worse condition?
Are these the same units that used to run from Oxford to Paddington? If so, they have been a disgrace for a while. My heart always sank if I saw one of those coming out of the blocks at Oxford station. As said above though, on Northern timescales they should have another 10 years in them.

Were they built before the 158’s? The 158 is soooo much better.
