I have done in the past. I know of a few people that volunteer at there local railway and also go to other railways for long weekends at holiday time.

Quite a few of our chaps volunteer at one or more other railways (quite often going for long weekends or a whole week if they're local to us). I carried on at the North Norfolk for a bit when I started on the GCR (having moved to live almost on the doorstep of the latter), but I couldn't commit enough time to do a proper job at both really.

Yes, people do. Only thing to watch out about is that rules and procedures can be different. If you can keep on top of that then there won't be a problem.

Yes -I volunteer regularly at one railway in the South East and a few weeks a year at one in North Wales. I agree it sometimes be difficult where procedures vary slightly.
I aware aware of several members who also volunteer at two heritage railways.

Thanks. The reason I asked is that I volunteer at one local heritage railway and there's another one about the same distance away from my home. I'd like to go there from time to time, although I expect to continue devoting most of my volunteering hours at the line I go to now.

I've done two - there's a lot of differences between my 'local' and my 'regular' and competency won't carry across, even in non-safety critical grades. I am an experienced TTI, at the Strathspey there is no assessment or formal passing out of TTIs - there is at this railway it turns out!

I'm just wondering if it's commonplace for people to volunteer at more than one railway.[/QUOTE
I'm a volunteer at the kesr there's been a healthy exchange of volunteers with both the nymr and nnr for many years plus the odd ones with the bluebell and iowsr]

I know that there are quite a few people that volunteer on one or more of the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railways, but then there are others who support only the one line.

Nationally, I would suspect that the percentage of volunteers who work at, or support more than one line, is around 10%. However, if you factor in other hobbies and volunteering for non-railways you might get that up to as much as a third, or even slightly more.

Personally, I'm in the latter group, as I am involved with a lot more than just my main railway.

I'd be interested to know where the 10% figure came from or if that is a random number plucked out of one's brain

I personally volunteer at one railway only, but I have in the past done the odd individual job elsewhere (erecting a signal at Levisham for the NYMR is one example).
