Martijn Gilbert, currently Managing Director of Go North East and previously CEO of Reading Buses, has been appointed Managing Director for both Hull Trains and Lumo to begin in September.

Martijn Gilbert has been appointed as the new Managing Director for Lumo & Hull Trains, a new role in which he will lead both of FirstGroup’s open access businesses. Martijn will join First Rail on 12 September 2022.

Martijn has extensive experience in the transport sector with previous roles at Arriva in both their bus and rail divisions, and as CEO of Reading Buses. Martijn, who is a Board member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), is currently the Managing Director of Go North East.

David Gibson, Managing Director of Hull Trains will leave the business in September when he will move to a senior leadership role outside of the rail industry.

Phil Cameron will continue in his interim position as Managing Director, Lumo through a handover period with Martijn before returning to his role in First Rail.

Commenting, Andy Mellors, First Rail Managing Director Non-Franchised Businesses, said: “I am delighted to announce that Martijn Gilbert has been appointed as the new Managing Director for Lumo & Hull Trains. Martijn is passionate about delivering excellent customer experience in the transport sector and his expertise will be vital, as we continue to grow our businesses. We are all looking forward to having him on the team. I would like to thank David for his leadership as we re-establish Hull Trains following the pandemic period, and also thank Phil for his continued dedication and support during the successful expansion of Lumo services.”

Commenting, Martijn Gilbert, said: “I am very excited to be joining the Lumo and Hull Trains team. It’s an honour and a privilege to be asked to lead both the established and well respected Hull Trains and the innovative new Lumo operation. I am confident that, working closely with our partners, we can realise the ambitious plans for the future and deliver great service for our customers.”
Interesting that Hull Trains and Lumo will now share a managing director, but hardly surprising. It’ll be interesting to see how these operations go under Mr Gilbert’s leadership, as he’s currently overseeing a huge round of unpopular service cuts at his current job with Go North East, hopefully not a sign of things to come at Hull Trains and Lumo.

I think the two operations between a huge multi region partially council funded bus operation and two very small family style commercial open access TOC's is not comparable and that Martjin, who has a history of improving customer service, developing engaged teams and driving profitability through sustainable investment in his previous roles brings to the table.

It's interesting to note the ever deepening relationship between HT and Lumo.

Both First Group Open Access operators, probably makes sense to try and share back office staff across both companies to reduce costs.

That happens already anyway.

Hull Trains and Lumo already share some of the TPE resources. The social media team from all 3 companies is the same, and so is parts of the control operation, who are based at Manchester ROC
