Is Crossrail fully metricated?

Why? Does the railway not work or something?
Not very well. Left Zizzi in Haywards Heath at 8:30pm this evening. Got home (near Horsham) at 10pm. One hour and 30 minutes to do a 15 mile journey without delays. I could have cycled the full journey at least 15 minutes faster.

But that isn’t Crossrail.

Am I right in saying most tram/light rail use km/h for speed? Manchester’s Metrolink is a notable exception.

Just use Imperial, the NR is all set up for this already.
NR (if that means either national rail or Network Rail) is set up for 1435mm and in all aspects has been since 1886 in all administrations that use standard gauge. That include all PW engineering aspects of railways in GB since then. The use of feet and inches for the gauge is perpetuiated to apppease those who just don't get the complexities of counting in 10s, (and those that pretend that metric measurement isn't 'British').

I can use both measures. I just prefer Imperial, it has a more natural feel to it, metric just feels artificial. I'd use metric more if we used decimetres, they're a useful size to have.

Metric isn't British though is it, it's French. That being said, I think you'll find Imperial is also based upon continental systems as well - ounces avoirdupois for example.

And I think we should go back to using Roman numerals too... Would make everything much clearer for everyone in my opinion. Just off to catch a class CCCXLV unit.

Metric is the system of measurement, it counts in decades, doesn't need any arcane conversions between one unit or another* and as anything manufactured/built in the last 50 years is based on metric dimensions, is the more accurate system to use. The origin of the system is totally irrelevant to me, - the pound is a Roman term for a 'weight', and in the UK is a weight derived from wool trading with France in the 12/13th century. The concept of the foot in serious measurement terms was introduced primarily by the Romans, and subject to the range of human body dimensional variations gradually homed in to a notional foot size. Both the pound and foot were formally defined with a metric standard in 1959 which was legally establishedf in 1963, - that date probably being early enough to predate most members here arithmetic education.

* Obviously there are plenty of inherited measures in the metric system (known as 'permitted non-SI units') where the decade relationaships don't exist, but most of these have little or no relevance to day-to-day public usage except time - (hrs, mins secs) and angles - (degrees). The main measurement units of linear dimension, (incl. area, volume), and weight, (incl. force, power, energy) have relationships that are first learnt before school age (i.e. numbers from 1-10).

I mean preferably the whole network would convert to metric because if you're going for consistency and universal measurements, it's best to use the international standard that is objectively better.

The prospective Brexit dividend proposed by Rees Mogg should get rid of this metric nonsense once and for all in accordance with public demand.

Yep. Fairly sure that whilst track distances along the Manchester Metrolink network are measured in metric (with the "Delta" (junction) nearby to Piccadilly Gardens having been designated as the zero point); speed limits on the system are all displayed in m.p.h.

Yes, but ETCS routes and controls are metric, eg the Cambrian system, in both distances and speeds.
I was assuming that would apply to the Heathrow branch and the ECML as ETCS is installed (and anywhere else).

Thameslink core and NCL are in MPH in ECTS mode.

Except almost nobody under 50 wants imperial.

The metric system is the tool of the devil! My class 158 gets forty rods to the hogshead and that's the way I likes it.

I suspect that very few people under 60 or even 70 want an unnecessarily complicated system like imperial units. Schools stopped most teaching by the time most in their '60s did their 11 plus.

As they should be. It would be irresponsible (to be mild) to expect a driver to switch between units.
Except that's exactly what Sheffield Tramtrain and TfW Cambrian drivers already have to do!

The imperial system is fine as long as people have a choice. The whole thing is just a brain worm planted by Boris to distract from other things, and it’s worked excellently.

Nothing wrong with miles or pints or ounces as long as you know enough about them to realise when you’re being ripped off. Bought cherries by the roadside last week. Advertised only in ounces and pounds. Shock horror. They made a killing.

I didn't know that. A disgraceful situation!
Hardly so. Speedos are capable of showing both speeds. And it's not hard to do a "back of the fag packet" conversion either.

Conversely, buying milk in countless corner shops where a "pint" is actually 500ml, "4 pints" is 2 litres etc. I'd guess that's probably the biggest metric/imperial con. Perhaps petrol and diesel would beat it.

That's the best advert for allowing only the official units to be used. That way those who weren't taught Imperial, and increasingly weren't even born, would less likely be ripped off.

Conversely I expect milk to be sold in litres as it is in most corner shops. Why supermarkets persist with pints baffles me.

That argument only really works if you think metrication ripped people off who didn’t bother to learn metric.
