Theres a slight problem that there’s no interchange at Willesden Junction, because that station has no platforms on the route taken by the SN service. The SN service also cannot call at many of the stations the DC lines pass through.
While the Southern service is useful, the issue is it only being hourly. The ideal scenario would be to eventually build extra platforms at Willesden Junction on the semi-fast WCML, adding an extra stop to Tring/MKC services (plus a minor frequency increase on the Overground WLL). This would also offer more interchange opportunities towards Richmond or Stratford, without having to change for the slower Bakerloo line or Watford DC first.

The Portsmouth/Southampton to Victoria services Monday to Saturday are half hourly. However on Sundays there is only an hourly service from/to Portsmouth only. No direct service from/to Southampton. That hourly service stops at all stations along the Arun valley.
I witnessed people having to stand all the way from Gatwick to Havant as it was so busy.
At a time when more people are traveling and flying it seems mirroring the weekday services is essential.

There is invariably engineering work somewhere on the Southern network on a Sunday, although admittedly not in the high summer period.

Commiting too many services to the Arun Valley on Sundays would be folly as it would have to be cancelled most weeks for engineering work (eg for only half the tracks available somewhere between London and Three Bridges).

The issues with staffing Sunday services would also be an issue.

Its always been like that on Sunday. Has nothing to do with covid or anything like that.

I was perhaps naively expecting with the withdrawal of the GWR services to Brighton that Southern would be providing some sort of cover to fill the void.

Heading towards Brighton in the morning, if you miss the 06:51 from Havant, arriving Brighton at 08:04, the next service is the 07:38 and does not arrive in Brighton until 08:55. That seems a really big gap.

Similarly in the evening, after the 16:30 from Brighton to Southampton, there is no through service to Havant and beyond until 17:30.

I think it is what is known as a 'resource led' timetable.

Southern have omitted the 0608 from Southampton Central to Horsham (and London Victoria) from their timetable but ran it under VSTP arrangements this morning. Other users on the west coastway aren't so lucky.

There was also a 1706 Brighton - Portsmouth & Southsea and 1833 return to Brighton run under VSTP arrangements this evening.

NR had some issues with the publishing of some trains. The trains you mention are booked to run and NR have been advised to get them published.

A facet of the May timetable is that, for most of the day, there are no direct services between Fishersgate and Aldrington. As both stations are in well populated areas of the Brighton conurbation, with significant local employment, it’s reasonable to assume there is (was?) some traffic between this pair, albeit not vast.

If you wish to travel between Fishersgate and Aldrington around the top of each hour, Journey Planner suggests you take a train to Hove (passing through Aldrington en route); then a second train back to Shoreham (passing through Aldrington again!), and finally a third train which actually stops at Aldrington. Cheekily, the site even suggests you should buy more than one ticket for this inconvenient itinerary. The culled West Worthing stoppers connected this pair twice per hour.
I'd suggest that travellers from Aldrington to Fishersgate are very close to zero and that 99% of travellers from those stations are going to Hove or Brighton. There's frequent bus services parallel to the railway line although not directly to the stations both of which are up alleys. Aldrington only exists because it was the junction station for the Devils Dyke branch.

I hadn’t realised until just now, (cos I’m never there that early), that the standard pattern of Southern departures from Southampton (ie about xx12ish to Victoria and xx28ish to Brighton), doesn’t actually get going for some while in the mornings.

But including the VSTP @JonathanH mentioned, it seems to me as though there’s actually an extra departure to Victoria, and a long gap in the pattern to Brighton. Is that because that’s where the demand really is?

The extra Victoria service seems to be 1J13 at 0637 - has that been a normal feature of recent full timetables?

If the Brighton to West Worthing trains aren't running, I presume this means the Southampton and Portsmouth trains will not only be absolutely rammed east of Chichester, but one or both services will also call everywhere east of Chichester to make up for the west worthing stoppers.
I fear that too. From Southampton/Portsmouth to Barnham they are effectively semi fast then become pretty much an all shacks service. Just looked at the timetable for today and 40 miles from Southampton to Barnham scheduled in an hour which isnt exactly brilliant but then the next 22 miles as an all stations (except Aldrington) takes 50 minutes which is a very poor 26mph and its almost as though the service is treated as two separate parts.

I think it's been like that for some years. The Arun Valley London service have a roughly 20 mins interval until 9am ish and the Littlehampton to Victoria services have peak extras that mean there's effectively no path for a Southampton to Brighton train East of Barnham until the morning peak has passed.

Thanks, so it‘s likely even if they (SN) found the stock for an extra Brighton train it could only come from Portsmouth in the path that GWR used?

I believe that is the case, all the Southampton early starters come from Littlehampton crewed by Barnham crew. I think they are the only drivers that sign the Havant to Southampton section. With the withdrawal of the 313s there's not going to be trains or crew for extra Southampton services.

I understand that that is how it has been but it doesn't have to be how it has to be.
Getting people on trains and out of cars must be a priority and therefore the network should be able to accommodate an increasing number of passengers. Fuel prices and the expense of airport parking is making people look for alternatives. It is not good if they are confronted by standing for over an hour.

Rather than finding reasons not to do it something, being a half full sort of guy, we should look at how we can make things happen.....

As I noted in the other Southampton Brighton withdrawal thread, the DfT franchise consultation that originally proposed removal of the GWR service did say that SN would be required to replace them. That’s what people need to push for.

Why are Southern allowed to drop a service almost completely? I moved to Crystal Palace at the end of February and 3 days later SN dropped the Victoria - London Bridge service (except Saturdays). I was expecting it back in the May timetable change, sadly not. Does anyone know if this is permanent?

Also I work at Wandsworth Common and any direct trains (was 4tph) to CP have gone the same way with no change in May either.

SN ignored my Tweet asking for clarification.

Why can't some of the Portsmouth/Southampton - Brighton services/stoppers be strengthened to 8-car? Is this due to shorter platform lengths on some stations (so use SDO)?

If so, then surely it is better to cascade the 377/3s back down so that they can be doubled up to 6-car? 6 is better than 4

They should have withdrawn that east Croydon Coulsdon Town to London Bridge via Forest Hill not withdrawing the London Victoria to London Bridge via Crystal Palace?

How else are they going to make the cuts needed? Cutting a service group where this an alternative for passengers is better than cutting one that doesn't.

The Victoria to London Bridge service is made up of Victoria to West Croydon still running to cover the route via Streatham Hill, London Overground running 4tph from Crystal Palace to New Cross Gate and then either the Jubilee Line or the residual stopping service into London Bridge.

Also I work at Wandsworth Common and any direct trains (was 4tph) to CP have gone the same way with no change in May either.
It is a three or four minute same platform connection at Balham.

Why can't some of the Portsmouth/Southampton - Brighton services/stoppers be strengthened to 8-car? Is this due to shorter platform lengths on some stations (so use SDO)?
Probably insufficient rolling stock. Using 8-car stock at 4-car platforms isn't a great idea even with SDO.

If so, then surely it is better to cascade the 377/3s back down so that they can be doubled up to 6-car? 6 is better than 4
That depends on where they think the 377/3s are best used, particularly given they are allocated to Selhurst.

They should have withdrawn that east Croydon Coulsdon Town to London Bridge via Forest Hill not withdrawing the London Victoria to London Bridge via Crystal Palace?
How is that conclusion reached? The return of (almost) all day services from the Sydenham corridor to East Croydon has much more network benefit than running the London Bridge to Victoria service, where a change can be made at Crystal Palace.

Ultimately we are all going to get used to the fact that services on the Southern network aren't as frequent as they used to be and that some have shorter formations and plan accordingly. If that saves some money, improves reliability and results in a railway that is more affordable for society as a whole that is a good outcome.

I think one main reason is they often share platforms at Portsmouth and Southampton. But I’ve seen that Southampton at least has had 8 car trains on Saturdays before. Maybe football related.

If you use 8 cars they block the level crossings at a lot of the West Sussex stations. At Fishbourne and Nutbourne these are ahb so the 2nd unit sits on the road with live shoegear so it's not normally permitted. I believe that running all the Coastway services as 8 cars would push the capacity of the electricity supply between Havant and Chichester.

Society's 'affordability' is not the only factor here - if we make suburban electric rail service go from 4tph to 2tph, or similar - guess what - people drive. That is worse for society as a whole - congestion, environment, health, you name it.

Your perceived realism is actually apologism. We should do and be better - and this forum is predominantly about 'the thriving' and the growth of the railway network.

Since when has the railway been "affordable"? Fares increase year on year for a lessor service, service cuts, short formations etc.

Perhaps if the railway are going to cut their services, perhaps they should cut their fares ...

Is there any hope of the service returning to something resembling pre-Covid in the medium term?

Very depressing that the story seems to be all about cuts, cuts, cuts (w.r.t 2019) - and not just to peak, but to off-peak as well. I echo concerns about a "vicious circle", if the railway is not going to be so attractive to passengers, then presumably more people will drive. I can see why they are happening (unit shortage due to the age of the 455s and 313s), but, there are from what I can make out quite a few spare EMUs around the network, can any of these run on third rail or be modified to do so? Too expensive I guess, but then if the service is unattractive they will presumably lose money in any case due to people using other modes.

It sounds like there is demand, at least, for the standard 2019 off peak timetable, judging by comments on overcrowding here - even if peak extras are limited.

The only hope is that BR went through some similar cuts-oriented timetables (1985 and 1991 spring to mind for the SR) and then in the former case things got better under BR by around 1988 or 1989, presumably due to an improving economy. Could the same happen now, maybe around 2024 or 2025 as a guesstimate to when the economy will get better.

It's most unfortunate the 455s and 313s have reached the end of their working lives in this era. Ten years ago, or ten years hence, then maybe we could just have thrown new stock at the problem. But then, the 455s themselves (along with other types of similar design) were introduced during the early-80s recession. How could they afford so much new stock then? The equivalent to the current plan would be to scrap the SUBs due to age (as actually happened), but not introduce the 455s, and just try and keep the SR suburban network going by sharing the EPBs around, nabbing some VEPs off mainline services, and keeping the 40-odd 508s down south.

It's a complicated issue. For Southern they can't afford to cut back their services, but also can't afford to improve them either. Just by reducing the carriages on the Southern Metro roughly 2000 seats a day were lost. It even had a small knock-on effect for the Oxted line where formations have been decreased to 8/10 carriages instead of 12 all day.

At least be grateful that GTR staff are the only operator not to vote for strike action.

I'm sorry, but this post is simply untrue.

Especially the part about the sydenham corridor services having much more network benefit.

Would you be able to elaborate? On the face of it, a decision must have been made to favour running London Bridge to East Croydon services over London Bridge to London Victoria services?

I guess that the East Croydon services use less rolling stock than the Victoria trains but is that the only reason to run one and not the other?

I'm sorry, but this post is simply untrue.
I agree that there could be an issue with confusing opinion and fact here. Is it wrong to express the opinion that the Southern May 2022 timetable is a good step towards a more efficient railway in challenging times?
